View Full Version : Better Quality than GKnot

Hi there,
I´ve been using the last two versions of GKnot (Divx 4.11 and Divx 5.02) and everything worked really fine. I get good results and the works fast and uncomplicated. Nevertheless I get the impression that some Divx Movies I see around the web are of better quality than the stuff I encode. I already emxperimented with most of the GKnot features (resizing filters and so forth) but still the image in the "other" divx movies is sharper and less blurred than the ones I encode.
Do advanced users use VirtualDub Filters (or AVIsynth) that are not included in the standard GKnot process.
I know that this question is not really to the point and rather general but maybe there are some hints.
If so, thanks in advance

Some movies looks better than others. Have you compared the same movie?

There are also two "competitors" to DivX 5.02: DivX 3 SBC and XviD. Pretty much every movie you download from the net is DivX 3 SBC.

Yes, most people do use filtering. GKnot just gives you the most basics of a script. It uses very little filtering. GKnot's usefulness comes from the info it gives you before you encode, and if you feel you don't need filtering, it automatically does the passes for you and will even mux audio. Very few movies are like this though.

IMHO most major hollywood productions do not require any special filtering. the dvd releases are heavily filtered and cleaned already.

the resize filter itself has a major influence on cripsness though, and should be well choosen and balanced with resolution, bitrate and given compressibility.

of course noisy material or special cases like anime can definitely be improved with the right filters. still, they should be used with care - each filter in the chain takes you one more step away from the original.
