View Full Version : Detecting bad frames/fixing avis (error: unspecified error (-100)

I have a few AVIs that constantly get

"VideoSourceAVI[ICDecompress] error: unspecified error (-100)"
no matter what processing method I use using virtualdub/nandub.
Even if I select "scan for errors" and "save as avi" it fails with above error. Using divfix with "cut bad parts" sometimes works but since it cuts parts of video it affects the audio sync, and still it doesn't remove all bad frames, so further procssing with virtualdub fails with above error.

A workaround I found was to treat the affected frames using AviDeFreeze. I give adjacent keyframes of the damanged frame and the resulting movie is processed OK using virtualdub/nandub. The problem is to find these bad frames... Is there an easy way to scan the video and get a list of all the bad frames?

What I do now is save pieces of the movie from where it last failed using virtualdub. The problem is that sometimes I can't easily translate the relative frame to the actual frame in the movie..

bottom line question: Is there an easy way to get a list of the damaged frames... Or better yet, an easier way to process such files with bad frames..

Thanks!

Yup, there is a way. Those bad frames are also known as FreezeFrames, as you mos probably know. There's a modified VDub Version, which scans for these frames.

can be found here:
http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/downloads/virtualdub.html

look for vdub_mp3_freeze.zip

Hope it's ok to link to divx-digest ;-)
The option you need is under File->check for freeze frames

Thanks for the answer!!

Actually I read a different thread and found a reference to that modified vdub so downloaded it and ran my defective avis and it produced the badframes.log file. I then fed to AVI DeFreezer which completely cleaned the file for further vdub processing, such as re-encoding, etc. After I tried it on 3 different files I came here to post this solution and saw your post...

The solution is Modified Vdub scan for freez frames (see link above) followed by AVI DeFreezer (give it key frames on both sides of the defective ones).

THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH...

no problem. a better way would be to install the divx antifreeze filter, wich skips them while playback. I'm not sure, but i think ffdshow can do this, too. This way you don't have to mess with the avis...

Hope someone reads this inactive for a while thread.

I tried that filter, but it only works in divx3.. I don't mind messing with the avis, this way when I burn them they are 100% perfect... I've used the above method on many avis, but recently I got this strange avi...

1. I scan the avi in the modified vdub mp3 freezer which puts out a badframe.log file on the c:\ drive (if that would be configurable I could run more than one version of this scanning!!!)

2. In the log file I see that ALL frames from 33000 until the last frame at 146000 are listed... The movie in vdub has 1 more frame listed as 146001.. Great I thought...

3. I input the previous key frame to 33000 and the 146001 and let AVI DeFreezer run... it dies after either filling up the disk or writing 4GB of data...

How do I fix this AVI??? I tried divfix 1.07 and it reports no errors..I tell it to reconstruct the file anyways and it does, but the file still has bad frames...

codec listed in vdub is DivX ;-) MPEG-4 Low Motion...

please help.....
