Can we author 2 HQ discs recorded on a 985 as 1?, I want to maintain original quality

I have a Philips DVD-985R recorder and I was wondering if there is any way we can record 2 DVD discs at the HQ speed and later put them together and author them onto 1 disc without having to recompress, or do other authoring that will degrade the quality. For example...I have a laserdisc that runs 1hr 33mins long. Well I think it's foolish to copy it onto the 985 at SP speed since HQ speed is practically no loss in quality. So is it possible for me to record side 1 of the laserdisc onto my 985 on 1 DVD at HQ speed, then do the same with side 2 on another disc, and later on, on my computer's Pioneer DVR-104, use some program that can attach the VOBs on both DVDs and allow it to create the complete program so that it will fit onto 1 DVD-R? In other words, I want put the entire 1hr and 33 min movie onto 1 4.7 gig DVD-R disc, while maintaining the original HQ quality. Is this possible? If so, has anyone done it? How? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

What is the resulting size of each of the two sides after recording at HQ? If the two together are less than 4.7Gbytes then it shouldn't be hard to combine them onto one by demultiplexing, recombining (both), and reauthoring. You'd get no loss of quality in that process.

This isn't possible without recompressing the approx. 6.5 GB
of files created by 1.5 hrs of HQ video.

The point is HQ mode uses a high bitrate to encode 1 hr only
on a 4.7 GB disc.

Your best bet is to switch to the SP speed which allows 2 Hrs. on a disc.

You can also put these on a double-sided 9.4 GB DVD-r at HQ speed
with the first hour on side one and the remaining 30 mins on side 2.

I have the 985; and have dumped files and removed menus from my disk
to a dvd-r.
