Laserdisc to DVD transfer - Capture Res?

I'm doing some research on laserdiscs and I'm intrigued with the possibility of doing some laserdisc to dvd transfers on titles which are long since out of print. Laserdisc looks like a great alternative to VHS for this purpose.

I've done a lot of analogue captures, but laserdiscs are new to me. The research I've done so far suggests that laserdiscs have a (NTSC)resolution of 528 or 544x480 which is, or is close to the valid 3/4 D1 (528x480) resolution of DVD.

The capture itself would be done at 720x480, but my question would be, is there any benefit of reducing the resolution to 3/4 D1 after the fact as opposed to leaving it at 720x480? One could use a higher bitrate with the lower resolution. My goal is to get ultimate quality from the capture.

Any suggestions?

so i would try those res's and see what it does for you
