View Full Version : ripping streams?

I think I've seen something like this, but I never used it, so it completely slipped my mind.

Is it possible to rip the contents of a streaming file while viewing it? (asf, or the likes)

It's annoying to have to download the same stream again and again, it would be nice to be able to save it even though it's not possible in the media player.

Henrik Nilsson

ASFRecorder (available here in the "software" section if I am not mistaken, otherwise try digital-digest.com) can do this, but of late, more and more ASF streams come with copy protections that defeat it. Still, give it a try. Lots of older stuff still works, and it offers a direct copy, which is always preferable.

A second alternative (indirect copy) is available if this does not work. What you'll need to do is record what is appearing on your monitor as the video plays. CamStudio (freeware) can do this for you, and can even focus on the area of your monitor where the video is playing, saving yourself the trouble of subsequent cropping. I believe I saw it available on cnet.com a few weeks back. If not, I got it from the developers at SourceForge.net. I you go to that 2nd site, you might want to spend some time there. Literally thousands of (open source) things like CamStudio going on over there. Worth a trip just to see what others are trying to do.

In any case, CamStudio is less than a half meg download, so it's something you may want for your toolbag, even if you don't need it right now.
