I read your post some weeks ago. you mentioned that you where filtering before you encoded. Im not sure what you mean by this. I just downloaded that vd_vcr+synch and want to switch over. I'm going to anyways. But my ? is this...
Did you mean you filter the some noise out of the frame's as you captured??
Like smart deinterlace, with a spatial filter or whatever else???
This what you mean because if it is...this is SUPERIOR to anything else' out there software based currently.
Read your post...your obviously experienced...so i had to ask...forgive me if it's a "duh" ? but i was/am just confused...but i have my finger's crossed :-)

Would have been better if you had replied to the mentioned thread instead of creating a new one.
Ok, after you opened VirtualDub(VCR+Sync), you press F6 to switch to capture mode. There you'll find a menu called "Noise reduction" somewhere under "Capture" or "Video" (don't remember exactly, but you'll find it). A submenu will pop up where you can enable the filter, and there's another submenu where you set the strength (I use seven 'ticks', unfortunateley it doesn't show a strength value, there's only the slider).
Do not use a regular filter, because in my experience this would take too much CPU. You can try, if you have a very fast machine, though. In my tests I couldn't even use the speedy "2D cleaner optimized" on my Athlon 1.33 GHz.
Hope that helps,
bb

thanks sorry for the extra thread ive jsut always disliked threads longer than 2 page's...and that one was pushing 3.
I thought when i first read that post you made i could use regular filter's and it would work without loosing too many frames
i also have a 1.33gig athlon...it's pretty good but the mobo i have for it (asus) is out of date and pretty slow.
too bad it's not what i thought ....that would of been something BOSS

Ok im extremely happy with capturing in vdub now. ive done it before but it was always asynch...but i have some weird result's. I have looked around here, cart's site, vdub's forum and several others but can't seem to find the correct setting's to use.
here's what im using...guestimating it really is
Lock video to audio
add/drop frame to keep synch
Should i use those or not...also what is the difference in caputring with driect draw over normal..whatever that is.
I also get this weird effect in the video when using noise reduction @ 17 ticks from the left.
If i have the noise reduction on i get a funky video motion. I mean
like the video looks good...in fact better alittle bit, but i can
see somebody's eyes move back in forth like they are shaking there
head but they are not. It looks sort of...alienish?? Looks weird
and wrong. Eye's are moving back and forth on there fact but there
head is staying still.
All in all if i can get these few things worked out im all set for sure. Im not sure what the "alienish" video is all about and not sure what capturing with direct draw has in advantage and disadvantage.
I have really looked to find out Direct Draw does better/worse in capture and can't find a thing.
Im proceeding from here to use the search bar in this forum section and hope to find some answer's...but all in all what i have listed is the only problem's/question.
Thank's, the vdub switch is a good choice and a alternative to my avi_io i was using...in other words, your statement about switching i have proved to myself now.

Just one thing for now (to answer the rest I have to get back to my computer):
A noise reduction setting of 17 (!) is way too much. You'll get heavy ghosting effects like it is known with other temporal filters. My recommendation was 7 ticks from the left, not 17.

err...synch problems again.
In vdub what should you check to insure synch.
im using vdubvcr+timer build
it work's most the time. and just now it didn't.
i got everything else the way i want it...so this is the only problem
i had this problem before last year with vdub but i know this version works. In the FAQ it does not mention anything about the synch options you should choose...which was the biggest issue people didn't use it to begin with. Some people didnt' have a problem but the majority did. All the reset is really user related....although im still not sure what capture with direct draw holds in advantage and disadvantage.

As bb said you should be using virtualdub sync. You can find it here (http://www-user.rhrk.uni-kl.de/~dittrich/sync/). I think I read somewhere that someone has combined this with the timer version of vdub, but I haven't seen it. If you come upon please post.
And follow bb's advice of only using 7 ticks (8 max!). I personally like to use 6. 17 is way too high. The benefit of doing this is that the capture is still in memory and hasn't been saved yet to a lossy format such as mjpeg. Noise is random information and lossy codecs don't like that. If you are using Huffvy then don't bother. Another benefit is with the some noise removed prior to saving, it helps the codec be more efficient, and I found on average that I get more capturing time with whatever given space available.
Unfortunately, even with virtualdub + sync, I drop frames, so I've gone back to avi_io. This, I believe is due to my crap on board sound (soundmax). Actually, even though I hate onboard sound, I get great sound out of this soundcard, but it's a shame I get dropped frames with capturing.
I'm not a big fan of soundblaster live cards. Can anyone recommend a cheap pci soundcard just for capturing audio that might help me get around this?

You can get VirtualDub 1.4.9.2 VCR + SYNC at www.virtualdub.net.
@McQuaid:
I had that problem with onboard sound, too. Go and get a cheap soundcard, and your problem will probably be gone.
BTW: I captured "Total Recall" recently without frame drops (did this film inspire you regarding the nick?).

Thanks for the link bb, didn't realize it was right under my nose so to speak. I'll probably grab some cheap pci card and see how it goes.
About the nick, it's funny I've heard the total recall reference a few times. It's actually a nickname I've had since highschool that has stuck and now I use it online.
@/xa: Another benefit of using vdub over avi_io for capturing is if what your capturing is in letterbox, you can crop out that area during capture, resulting in the codec dealing with a smaller area. Not a hugh benefit, but every bit helps. :)

How do you know how much you can crop before the film starts?

Well, 62-64 lines on the top and bottom is usually a safe bet (when capturing fullframe 480 lines ntsc for 1.85:1 ratio films), but if it's a tv show (enterprise for example) that's displayed in widescreen, you can capture once without cropping, find the exact values, and use them from then on. If it's a cap from vhs or laserdisc, do a test run without cropping to find the values. But yes, if it's a one time widescreen capture from live television, it's difficult to be exact.
