Menu: Select Options->Preferences. Then under Main tab you have Dub Defaults: Process Priority. It is probably set to default. You should set it to Even Higher. Highest will make the mouse response very unstable (try it).
During encodes you can call up the status window and get a similar drop down list there if you want to change priority momentarily when doing something else.
Also note that if you are not doing anything during your encodes the priority setting will have very little effect, you won't gain more than 2-5% speed at best. In the normal situation when you try to watch an mpeg the player and VD have the same priority, so the player gets as much as it wants (up to 50% of CPU) and VD the rest. With and increased priority of VD it will get as much as possible all the time, while the mpeg player won't get what it needs to play the mpeg.

Okay, I encoded a rip that I had captured myself and I encoded with 5.02 and did a 2-pass, so I had just added the to jobs to the job-list and then just whent to school. But the show I encoded was 30min, and I HAD added some filter, noise redux, deinterlace ect., so I know it would take longer time. But when I came home I could use my computer like it was doing nothing, and it was still converting. So as I sat there, I watched a music video on Windows Medie Player, and if my computer is working very hard, then the movie wont run very smoothly, so it couldn't have been working very hard.
Well the 30min movie took a little over 20 houres to convert... :(
