jerky playback from avi source

I have an svcd that when played on my standalone i get jerky playback. The video seems to jump every second or so. I've tried changing the field order on the encoder tab (didn't help). I also unchecked the "add SVCD scan offsets" in bbmpeg and muxed by hand (didn't help).

The avi source file does not display the jekiness and the muxed mpg isn't jerky when played back on my computer.

Is something happening when the SVCD image is created? I used VCDeasy.

I have attached my DVD2SVCD log if it helps.

Any ideas?

At what speed have you burned your disks?

Yeah it sounds like you burned the disks to fast, try using the full proof method on burning svcd's located in this forum.

I burned at 8x, which I always do and have never had any trouble. I am using a Yamaha scsi 16x burner.

I will try at 4x and see what happens. I've always used nero to burn my image files, but I'll try the daemon tools or whatever its called, too.

I 've been burning at 8x with nero and the yamaha burner for 6 months now and haven't had any trouble yet, but I'll give it try.

I tried playing the disc with PowerDVD and WinDVD both, niether one was "jerky." I do not believe it is my burning method.:confused:

I burned the disc using the method described in the Q&A it is still jerky. The mounted image file played fine on my computer using media player, winDVD and powerDVD.

I re-encoded the file using DVD2SVCD to create the image with vcdxbuild, I'll see how that works. Maybe it is something I did with VCDeasy. I have been using VCDeasy for a long time now, though and have never had any probs with it.

I also know its not anyhting with DVD player itself because I can play a disc I encoded and recorded before the troublesome culprit and it played fine.

I'll keep my post updated, if anyone else has any ideas, PLEASE let me know.

conclusion: its not VCDEasy.

Try using Nero and just burning the muxed.mpg (not the bin/cue) file with the SVCD template and see if you have any issues with it that way.

so you mounted your cd image with daemon tools and played with powerdvd and it wasn't choppy? then it must be your dvd player...perhaps your average bitrate of 2230 is too high for your dvd player to handle?

I've tried just burning the mpg with nero, no change.

I did mount the image with daemon and it did play fine on my pc, as for the bitrate being to high, I have another disc (different movie) with the same bitrate and it plays fine.

I'm trying some other things today, I'll keep post updated.

It maybe that your bitrate is infact too high try dropping the max to 2400 as a test.

I noticed that resample audio is in you avs file twice. I don't think this would cause a problem, but you never know. If you edited your avs file manually did you add resample audio on your own?

One last thing to try and this just popped into my head. In fact try this first. Start crash recovery and load the d2s file, go to the bbmpeg tab and click on advanced settings, uncheck add svcd offsets. Then simply continue from muxing and cutting. I had a problem kinda like this and unchecking the bbmpeg part fixed it for me.

If none of that works I fear it's either the original file or a compatibility issue with DVD2SVCD and your player.

I've tried unchecking the "add svcd offsets" and it didn't help. I dropped the average bitrate from 2230 to 2000 and re-encoded it this morning, still have to mux and record. I'll see how that works.

I've even tried to encode with cce by hand without using d2s and it sitll is jerky.

Yes I did manually add the extra resample audio to the avs, it seemed to solve some cce freezing probs I had earlier with some different encodes. I'll try removing that as well.

I know its not a compatibility isssue with d2s and my player because I did another movie yesterday and it was fine.

The original avi source seems to be ok. I ran an error scan on it with vdub and it was clean.

I'm lost and frustrated. I've tried everything ican think of and nothing is working.

I may try to rencode w/ tmpg (ugh!) as vcd instead of svcd and see how that works.

the thing is avereage bitrate can mean a lot of things...like you could have average bitrates of 2230 and have your bitrate throughout the movie vary from 800-2500 or you could have a releatively consistent bitrate that only goes from 2000-2400...so just because your average bitrate is below the max, those times when the bitrate goes above average might be what is screwing your movie up..i dunno, just a thought.

Unfortunetly sometimes certain AVI's are just not compatible with DVD2SVCD or CCE. It may seem perfectly fine, but be just enough different to cause an issue.

You could also try burning the encoded video before it was muxed to see if the video without audio still does it.

Try converting the orginal AVI format. If it's Divx 3 then make it Divx 4 and so on. Just stay away from 5 if you can. If it's not Divx then convert it to Divx 4.

The only suggestion I have left is to try TMPG instead of CCE.

I tried tmpg instead of cce, same jerky result. I am now burning just the mpv file w/out audio and will try that.

I think the file is already divx 4, so that's not an issue.

I am thinking it is the audio portion of the avi file. When I try to extract the audio as a wav in vdub I get the error:

"The requested audio compression is not compatible with the input format. Check that the sampling rate and channel count of the input match those of the requested format."

Sample rate is 48000 hz and I am not changing or converting that to 44100.

Channel is left at stereo.

Is there anything I can do or try to do to the audio to fix what ever is wrong with it.

It is actually a divx file with ac3 audio (stargate 2x02 amc).

I am trying to download a different version of the file to see if it is corrupt as well.

I'll let you know if the mpv by itself is jerky.

** addendum **

The audio file is the culprit. The mpv alone plays jerk free on my stand alone.

I'll ask again, what is wrong with the audio & what can I do to fix it. Any ideas?

Progress Update:

Just thought I would let everyone know, if you have an avi w/ troublesome audio as I did, use Goldwave sound editor.

It solved the problem I was getting with the audio created by D2S and it also worked when vdub wouldn't even extract the audio to begin with.

My svcd plays without jerkiness now on my standalone. After a week and a half of frustration I have reached the unreachable... or something like that.

Just out of curiosity did you ever try fixing it with BeSplit?

If not and you have the time try it. I am no expert, but if you do a search on BeSlpit look for posts by DspGuru as it's his baby and he has helped many here with audio issues and DVD2SVCD.

The jerkiness threw me off. I don't remember results like that before from a broken Avi, but I know BeSplit does fix them.

What the prob actually was (I'm posting this in hopes of helping some other poor soul who happens to try this), I was taking a 25fps avi encoding it at 480x480, not 480x576. When I encoded at pal resolution it played fine. I had done this a few times before and had never had any trouble. Apparently it is not the best of ideas.
