When it says 5%, is that the first 5%, i.e. the first few minutes into the movie?

I ask because obviously the first few minutes are just showing the credits, which is usually dark and might overestimate the compressibility of the movie. Usually I like to choose 1% to 2% because of time constraints. So does it start at the beginning of the movie, or does it choose a value in lets say, the middle of the movie?

As you can see the middle of the movie would be a much better choice as it gives a good representation of what the movie looks like (i.e. it's compressibility), not the beginning credits or the intro logos.

What's strange is I have chosen 1% before, and I've still come out with perfect filesize of 700mb rips; maybe I just got lucky.

Hi-

When it says 5%, is that the first 5%, i.e. the first few minutes into the movie? .

Nope, it takes 14 of every 280 frames throughout the entire movie and gives you a 5% cross section of the whole movie. That's what the "SelectRangeEvery(280,14)" line in the .avs means. It has nothing to do with determining the final file size, but helps determine the quality of your final movie for a given resolution and file size. The 5% has been extensively tested to give you the best compress test result in a relatively short period of time.

I have done quite a few tests using 5% and 1%, and really don't find that much difference between them, only a percent or two. I usually use 1% to find the best resolution then run a final 5% check to ensure everything looks good. Saves a little time.
