TMPGEnc and jerky movies

HI all, I've read everything I could find here about jerky movies (DVD format) and still am not sure what the problems is. Every movie I encode (from AVI)is jerky during panning scenes. I'm using TMPGEnc on a windows XP system. 1 gig of pc133 memory and 120 gigs of harddrive space (western digitals). It's an Abit KT7E mobo with an AMD 1.2 gig T-Bird. Burning with a Pioneer DVR-104. I have tried lower the bitrate from 4000 to 3000 and that didn't help, tried every setting change I could think of in TMPGEnc and still no help. Looking for a little help from the TMPGEnc experts here.

Is the avi you're re-encoding downloaded? The reason I ask this is because a common practice lately is when encoding avis many people will reduce the framerate to bring down the overall file size.. The downside of this is the jerky motion that you describe. If this is the case then unfortunately there is no way to retrieved those dumped frames.

First, let me say thank you for the reply! Yes, it is a download AVI file and I have to say that I'm glad it wasn't me (starting to go crazy over this!) So there is nothing I could do to prevent the jerky motion at all? I have a large collection of d/l'ed AVI's and only one out of 10 has not had the jerky problem. Could all of them be suffering from the same problem?

Yeah that definitely sounds like the problem then... lowered framerates are becoming more and more common nowadays to keep bandwidth to a minimum. Personally I'd prefer if they would just encode the avis at a slightly more lossy bitrate and leave it at 24fps.
Unfortunately there is no way to remedy this that I'm aware of, not without some kind of extensive filtering or something to try and blend frames, which would introduce it's own problems and would probably end up looking worse in the end anyway.

When I look at the movie summary it says the movie is 23 fps. Just sure my information won't it say someting like 21 if some frames were removed or does it just say 23 regardless?

I'm pretty sure it should tell you exactly what frame rate the movie is running at, and if it's telling you 23fps then there is one frame dropped, and even just 1 frame dropped per second will be enough to make the motion jerky. Obviously though the more frames dropped the more noticable the jerkiness will get.
