Hi. I have been trying to fix this problem for at least 10 hours total. That includes reading a backlog of about 30+ threads on this forum. Nothing has fixed my problem so far.
Ok so here are my problems:
1st problem - when I do the compressiblity check, it starts and finishes in about 1 second. The values are not loaded into the Bits*Piexl/Frame. I can usually fix this by closing the movie, hitting the "reset" to defaults button on the bottom-left of Gknot and then opening the dv2 file and choosing all the options over again (divx5, 1 700mb cd, 1xvbrmp3, 128bits, NTSC anamorphic, smart crop all). Then I save and encode and I can do the compressibility check (sharp bicubic, no noise, no field operations).
So IF I am able to get the compressibility check I begin to transcode. Transcoding takes a while, probably about 20 minutes if I am not doing anything else on my PC.
2nd problem- Upon the completion of Transcoding, Gknot attepms to start the first pass about 3 times ( I can tell because it blinks on and off in the taskbar) and then it tells me "invalid log file" and it does not complete.
Now what's odd is I have done SEVERAL divxs before and I have never had any problems. This probelm just started occuring, and I cannot think of any system changes (new programs) I have made that would cause this. The only thing that may have something to do with it is I've recently started attemtpting to encode NTSC 29fps 99% movies which require me to do ITVC. This is likely when my problems started. To Do ITVC I just select NONE in DVD2AVI and when I begin to encode I set the framerate manually to 23.9 and I check the ITVC tab before I encode. However, now, I am still having the problem with "FILMs" like the Jackie Brown DVD.
I have tried uninstalling GKnot and reinstalling it. Is there an "uninstall" feature in the control panel? I just uninstall it by deleting the c:\program files\Gknot directory and I delete the 3 gknot files in the c:\windows\prefectch directory. And I have tried to unintstall and reinstall Divx5 (first Gknot then Divx5) and it seems to not have fixed the problem.
Using GKNOT .21 update to .26 update to .26.1.
Please Help!

Hi-
I can think of several things you can check, but none are guaranteed to fix the problem.
1. Before starting the encode, run the preview in the place where you set up the .avs. Either that or open the .avs in VDub and scroll around to make sure it doesn't crash and that it's not an .avs problem.
2. Make sure the DivX5 codec is recognized by opening VDub and going to Video-Compression to see if it is listed among the codecs.
3. Make sure you don't install DivX4 when installing GKnot. If you did, get rid of it and reinstall DivX5.
4. Reinstall GKnot. First go to the Options Tab of GKnot and Delete Registry Keys, and then delete it as you did before. Reinstall GKnot and the updates, as before, and then install DivX5 after.
5. Smart Crop All when using IVTC can give you crop figures that will cause the crash (see #1). Make sure it's not giving you odd numbers. If it is, change them.
6. As I understand it, you either set the frame rate to 23.976fps OR check IVTC before starting the encode, but not both together (thanks jggimi).
10 hours, eh? You must be pretty frustrated by now. I suspect it's either #5 or #6 above. By the way, I did the 10th Anniversary Jackie Brown last week and didn't need to IVTC-Force Film worked fine. I enjoyed the movie, though. Ordinary black woman (if I can call Pam Grier ordinary) outwits the feds and the gangsters. Good luck.

I don't quite understand you here. How can I run the .avs preview before I start the encode. The .avs is only created after I have begun the encoding process. After DVD2AVI I am only left with the .d2v and the .ac3, along with my vobs. After that no other files are created unitl I do a compressibility check and the encoding.
I just tried Jackie brown again and it gave me an "invalid log file" error before it started the first pass. I just tried the .avs in Virtual Dub and it has been playing fine so far (so far first 12 minutes without a crash).
As an experiment, I took the 1st vob from Jackie Brown, which is only about 800mb. I did a DVD2AVI project with that 1 vob and the other vts files. After I had my tiny .d2v and .ac3, I put them into Gknot, and it did the first pass without a hitch!
But when I went back to the entire Jackie Brown movie, it gets invalid log before starting the first pass again. :( Yes I am VERY frustrated. Especially since I have to wait like an hour each time before I can figure out if the problem is fixed or not.
2. It's listed, along with a bunch of other stuff.
Never installed Dix4. I also don't install Divx3.
I didn't know about deleting the registry. Thanks! I always wondered why eveytime I reinstalled Gknot it would sitll have my custom settings. Killing the registry files got rid of my settings right away. Unfortunately, after reinstalling Gknot, I am still having the same problems.
5. Smart Crop All when using IVTC can give you crop figures that will cause the crash (see #1). Make sure it's not giving you odd numbers. If it is, change them.
Smart crop did give me odd nubmers with one of the "NTSC" .d2v's I tried. Just to clarify, by odd numbers, you mean the odd numbers in the "WidthxHeight" box right. Those were odd so I moved around the resolution to make them even. When I do not use Smart Crop, what should I use, "disable" crop or one of the other options?
By the way, when you did Jackie Brown did you use Smart Crop. I just did with my latest "invalid log file." Of course, with the "mini" jackie brown I did, Smart Crop was enabled and everything was ok - it began the first pass.
Thanks for all your help so far.

Several comments.
About errors that improper IVTC procedures will cause:
Agent2099 wrote:To Do ITVC I just select NONE in DVD2AVI and when I begin to encode I set the framerate manually to 23.9 and I check the ITVC tab before I encode. Manono wrote:6. As I understand it, you either set the frame rate to 23.976fps OR check IVTC before starting the encode, but not both together (thanks jggimi). This can reduce your framerate to 17.976fps, not something you anticipate.
Until this past week, I used to recommend making the manual change on the main Gknot page. Then I discovered that, if you are encoding end-credits separately, Gknot cannot calculate your credit-start frame properly. The result will be an incorrectly calculated framerate, due to this procedural error. In a conversation with theWef about my stupidity over this, I am now changing my recommendation. (This assumes that my recommendations should be considered, quite a presumption on my part.)
1. Use Force FILM whenever Telecined sources allow it (FILM% >= 95).
2. Use any of the many manual IVTC procedures on Telecined sources that can't or shouldn't be forced filmed.
3. When using a manual IVTC procedure: Turn on IVTC in Gknot, and select the "recalculate bitrate" IVTC option as well. In this way, the number of frames and framerate will be adjusted, even if you edit the .avs to alter the default Decomb filters, or use other IVTC options.
On .avs scripts and previewing
Agent asked:How can I run the .avs preview before I start the encode...At the On the window that pops up when you press the "Save&Encode" button, you will see several options below all the filter choices -- "Save&Encode" "Save" "Edit" and "Preview."
The Save&Encode button will save your .avs script with the filters you've chosen, such as cropping and resizing, then whisk you automatically over to the "Add Job" section of the Encoder tab.
The Save button will let you save your .avs script in a file. It can then be loaded into any .avi player or editor, as if it were an .avi file.
The Edit button will take you to a text editor, so you can alter the script prior to saving. I use this quite often to alter the Decomb filter options when I use IVTC.
The Preview button will actually save the script in your Gknot folder, rather than the movie folder, as a file called "Preview.avs" -- and then launch WMP6.4 to play it. I don't use this much, I usually prefer to save the .avs then review it in Vdub, where I can examine individual frames...something WMP doesn't let me do.
I will often make changes to the filters and test over and over again. When I've got it the way I want it, I then go to the Encoder tab in Gknot and press the Add Job button.
Virtual Dub not running correctly
It's obvious something is wrong, since your credits (a single-pass encoding) and your first pass of the main content didn't seem to run long enough. Of course, I'm no expert at reading logs.
Sometimes -- people like manono can see something wrong in the .avs script. If you could copy and past that into your next reply (leaving out all the comment lines that begin with #) perhaps he or another AviSynth expert could see something obvious in the script.

Hi-
How can I run the .avs preview before I start the encode.
In the screen where you set up the .avs (saying from left to right along the bottom-Save And Encode-Save-Preview-Edit-Cancel), hit Preview. If you get "AviSynth: Caught An Access Violation...", then the .avs is no good. It's a good idea to Preview the .avs before every encode to save yourself wasted time.
Are you using Subtitles? Try turning them off and then Preview again. If it doesn't crash any more, then it's the subs. Try and put them after Resize using the Edit button and Preview again. If it still crashes, then it's probably the crop. You gave me everything but the .avs. Include that in the next post, but knock out all the lines beginning with "#".
Just to clarify, by odd numbers, you mean the odd numbers in the "WidthxHeight" box right.
I meant the 4 little pixel crop boxes above that, but I think the WidthxHeight box will also show the error. There's nothing wrong with Smart Crop All. I just Prefer Smart Crop Left-Right because it takes from the left and right and keeps those 2.35:1 movies from becoming any skinnier than they already are. Smart Crop All takes from the top and bottom. But that doesn't really apply to Jackie Brown which is 1.85:1. But if either causes you to wind up with an odd number in WidthxHeight, then go back to Pixel Crop and adjust to get rid of the Odd number.
Are you really doing Jackie Brown to 416x240? Doesn't Pam deserve better than that? None of my business, I know.:)

LOL.
I think I have found the answer to this problem.
Ok, I just tired my "tiny" expiriment again. I copied 1 .vob, and all the vts files to a directory. Tried the whole process and what do ya know, first pass starts fine!
So what I do is open the FULL Jackie Brown .d2v, and I mess around with different resolutions. None of the resolutions below 512x288 will do the compressibility check. ALL resolutions above 512 complete the compressibility check fine.
This all makes since because, when I encoded earlier movies, the reason they all worked fine was because they were all Sopranos Episodes. What's unique about Sopranos episodes you say? THEY ARE ALL LESS THAN AN HOUR LONG! THUS, when I encoded them they were all at very high resolutions (640+) AND very high bitrates. I chose very high resolutions on the Sopranos because I was able to achieve very high bitrates at those resolutions. These 2-hour movies didn't give me good bitrates at high resolutions (700mb CD), which is why I was setting the resolution so low!
So if my theory works correctly, I will try Jackie Brown at at least 512 (hopefully I'll get at least 40bits at that resolution because I like to fit my divxs on single CDs.
If it works I'll let you know - and it should possibly be added into the Guide. As it stands, it seems Gknot will only downsize the resolution to a certain extent.
edit - I get about 37bits at 512x288. Currently transcoding. Will update in 1 hour to see if first pass begins. I'm almost positive I will not get the "invalid log file" error.

Hey-
That's a new one on me, if true. But I've never tried to do a movie at that low of a resolution before either. Good find. Let us know how it goes.

First Pass: Success.
This would explain the posts I've seen where people have both the problem with the compressibility test and the "invalid log file" error. There is a correlation between the two. In fact, the compressibility test is a good "test" to see whether or not you will get the log error. If your compressibility test fails that resolution, in all likelihood your first pass will also fail.
You can "get around" the compressibility test and waste allot of time by upping the resolution to an acceptable level before you do the compressibility test. Then you can complete the test, and go back and lower the resolution (too much) before you encode. The result is an "invalid log file" error.
Perhaps this should be added to the FAQ and/or Guide.
I appreciate all the help and I hope I can help others that have this problem.

I`ve been having the same problem as you and unfortunatly it was not solved by your method. I`ve isolated my seemingly similar problem to the pro features of divx 5. Without these features activated all my encodes have worked fine

My results are still the same.
Any time the resolution is below 512 vertical (doesn't matter is its Anamorphic Widescreen or 4:3) the compressiblity test won't run, and I get an invalid log file error before the 1st pass.
Almost every movie I encode now is at 512x resoltuion. Unless I do a dual CD, then I might up the res a bit.
