CCE encoding speed

Hi all,

A question - I notice a lot of guys writin that they get speeds of 1.4 - 1.6 out of their Athlon XP 1800s .......

I have 3 here running XP with half a gig of ram in each machine using Raid arrays....2 XP1800s and an XP2000 . I cannot get the speed past .980 on the 1800s or 1.1 on the XP2000...Any chance Im missing something? All other processes are minimzed or cut - CCE is on above normal priority.

Oh yeah - im using CCE 2.62

Use CCE with mpeg2dec(2) mode !

For having that use either cce 2.50 or 2.64.01.10 (not 2.64.01.02), also no 2.62 ...

You're getting around 30% more speed.

Another annotation:
You give no real needed informations.
What resolution, what bitrate, do you resize, what resizing filters, do you do any filtering, what source material, interlaced, progressive, other settings, what frameserving way, frameserving at all and some more questions.

Sorry but on that basis no speed comparisons can be done at all !!

Also, while CCE supports multiple processors, avisynth doesn't. Which effectively means that CCE supports only one processor when using avisynth.

The .98 is UNUSUALLY slow for an XP1800 just frameserving, especially duals.

Tell us more about your setup. If you are just doing a simple frameserve into CCE 2.50, you should be getting 1.3-1.4 easy. Members do report that 2.62 slows down some, but stills still pretty low.

What about your swapfile? Is it on the same drive as the file you're encoding? Your hard drive might be the bottleneck.

Hi all - I am using Robshots guide exactly - DVD source frame served thru dvd2avi , vfapi etc....

Gonna change my swap drive tho - having said that - there is half a gig of ram in these things - ill try anyhow :-)

the reason your speeds are slow if because you're using vfapi to frameserve. switch to avisnyth to frameserve and your speeds will increase dramatically.

Hmm - not done anything with AVIsynth.... Can someone point me at a guide to install it and use it or is it a simple type of thing?

Checkout the Avusynth section in doom9, there is an excellant FAQ. The prog can be downloaded from the download section > utils (I think it's sitting at version 2.05).

I have read several times that it works faster than vfapi.

I use it myself (P4 2Ghz) and normally get a speed of about 1.2 to 1.3)

why not 2.64.01.02? Reason that I ask is cuz I just updated to it from 2.5 today--but haven't encoded anything yet. Please fill me in.

Because it could not open .avs (avisynth) and .vdr (virtual dub) directly.

So mpeg2dec(2) mode would only be possible with buggy Link2 (which is no freeware too).

And with vfapi (freeware) you can't get mpeg2dec(2) to work with full speed in cce (because vfapi needs YUV-RGB conversion and CCE converts that back RGB-YUV; that's more than 30% speed loss)

i use vfapi on an xp1900+ and i get speeds of 1.6-1.7 every time.. using CCE 2.50

Hmm - im stil only getting 1.1 on the 2000XP

What is everyone encoding? Im doing "the Gift" - downrating from avg bitrate of 7500 to AVG Bitrate of 3900. PAL progressive and all that - no filters - standard settings under CCE

Of course, none of the above discussion takes into account the encoding of DV Type 1 / Type 2 AVIs, just re-encoding of VOBs to smaller .M2Vs!! :( :scared: :rolleyes:

i get ~0.9 on my Duron 700 @ 933 from a DV source (DirectShow DV export from Prem6, which is type2 i think)

I would hold off going to the expence of building a new system until you have fully investigated the cause of your slow fps in cce.

The speeds atainable vary from person to person because they are working on varying source material and using different
methods/setting.

A lot of things can effect your speed.Resolution is a biggy,i can get 2.4 encoding at 352*288 compared to 1.1 at 704*576 on my 1600+@1500mhz.

These speed are futher effected if you apply filter(s) to the source.my 2.4 at 352*288 is slowed up to 30% with just one filter,at this resolution a field is lost and sharpness with it,so applying a sharpening filter will yield better quality but at a significant speed loss.

the best bet for an answer to your woe is to list details of:

1.the resolution you encode at.

2.the frameserver you use --(already determined).You get a definate and significant speed jump by using avisynth to frameserve,as will anyone else using vfapi.Avisynth is dll that sits anywhere on you hd so long as it is registered and is used by manualy writing a script in notepad simalar to this:

then the script is loaded directly into your encoder.this cuts out the need to convert between colorspaces(amoung may other things)for a good speed increase.

Please do read the Avisynth FAQ and try a simple script for your self.You will never go back to vfapi again(if you do need to convert a source that is already in RGB color then avisynth does that too by adding this line "ConvertToRGB()"to a script directly
below :"MPEG2Source").

ResampleAudio(44100) at the bottom of the script is needed or it will not open in CCE.also untick audio in CCE.

3.Your source -- Are you encoding from AVI,Mpeg,QT,DVD.Aspect ratio also has an impact on speed,a 16:9(widescreen)source is faster than a 4:3(fullscreen)source to encode.

these and any other details you think may be significant will better help in finding a way to get you fare flying along :-)

I'm new at this, I just started using CCE 2.50 a couple days ago, but that's the same speeds I'm getting on my XP2000+. All I've done are 720x480 with a pretty high minimum bitrate (4000-4500), and I use vfapi too. Guess I'll switch to avisynth when this one is finished though, a speed gain of 25% sounds really good.

I'm using CCE 2.64 and I get around 1.2 doing DVD's to MPEG2 @
Min. bitrate: 2,000
Average bitrate: 4000
Max bitrate: 9800

I'm using a P4 2.0Ghz with 512MB of DDR and a 7200RPM HD.

BTW, I'm using VFAPI. I can't seem to get AVISYNTH to work correctly.

I'm doing dvd source with dvd2svcd. Soon will be using ifoedit,dvddecrypter etc when I get the sony dvd burner. Anyway here are my CCE RT results all using avisynth. http://www.mrbass.org/dvd2svcd/ccespeeds/
Many factors can affect CCE encoding speed. Albeit not are all relavent to CCE DVD encoding many are. Check out dvd2svcd newbie reference (http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvd2svcd_newbieref.html#15) near very bottom under Basic Info [Speeds]
I'll have to change SimpleResize currently 20-25% to 20-40%(40 when using P4).
