I bought TMPGEnc 256. As 257 came out there was a changes list that indicated to me (as non native english speaker) that they rely on third party software for mpeg2? I didn't quite understand the english mix with technical words.

Can someone explain this aspect of TMPG in simpler english? Is there a risk for me in upgrading to 257 or 258 or should I stay with my version 256? This version works good for me - but as a paying customer I can get free updates.

After you have encoded an MPEG2 Stream for SVCD/DVD you couldn't re-open that file in tmpgenc as a source. with v2.57 and up you can now as long as you have one of those third party programs installed on your system. TMPGEnc still does the encoding using its own algorithms, but uses these programs to decode the MPEG2 to open them.
