I notice that the deinterlace setting is always default on "no deinterlace". Does this mean that I can leave this setting like this?
I understand from the docs that "telecide" is the best but I can imagine that since the DVD and the resulting SVCD both need interlacing that it makes no sence to deinterlace.
What setting is required here?

No you don't have to deinterlace, but a good number of people like to. Telecide is generally considered the best. Interlacing is most commonly used when the output is going to be played on computers or hi-def TVs, both cases where interlacing is nonexistant.

Hmm, I am not sure I understand what you mean:
A - In DVD2SVCD I never have to use deinterlacing...
B - No deinterlacing if played on PC and HDTV but deinterlace for other TV's...
C - Use deinterlace to be sure...
With "no deinterlace" is it true that the interlacing from the DVD is copied 1:1 to the target SVCD?
If I backup a NTSC DVD to a PAL SVCD - does this influence the deinterlace setting that I should choose?
Is there a reason why people like to deinterlace if it appears to be a waste of time?

I'll try to be more clear:
You never have to deinterlace, it is purely your own decision.
You should deinterlace when the output SVCDs are to be watched on either PC or Hi-Def TV.
The effects of deinterlacing will not be noticeable if viewed on standard TVs.
In my opinion, it is a good idea to deinterlace anyway, so that later if you want to watch the SVCDs on the computer, or you get yourself a sweet new TV, you'll have that added benefit.
If you choose not to deinterlace, you do simply that. So I guess you could say the interlacing is copied 1:1 to the SVCD from the DVD, but that is worded rather misleadingly, since interlacing is a property of the video, not another item that can be 'copied'. Simply stated - if you don't deinterlace an interlaced source, the output video will look more identical to the source. However, that is not always a good thing, since interlacing is bad.
Converting from NTSC to PAL should not affect your deinterlace settings. Basicly, just pick a deinterlacing method you like, and use it across the board. In rare instances, certain films will require different methods, so be sure to use the preview feature before you start the conversion process.
Deinterlacing is never a waste of time, thought it's benefits will not be percieved with legacy, analog devices such as standard CRT TVs. As stated, PC monitors and Hi-Def TVs will show the benefits of deinterlacing.

Why? In my humble opinion it's never a good thing to deinterlace. Keep the SVCD interlaced! That way it will look great if you play it on a standalone DVD player or output from the computer to the TV. If you deinterlace the material, you ruin it.
To avoid seeing those "lines" when you watch the SVCD on your computer monitor, select a software DVD player that allows you to turn deinterlacing on (and off, for when you output to TV). I never deinterlace my Mpeg-2 clips, instead I watch them with WinDVD and turn "force bob" on.

I don't agree. Deinterlaced material looks awful on a "regular" TV. Deinterlacing *will* degrade the material and it will not look good on a standard TV.

Well, Swan, that is your opinion. But I sincerely doubt deinterlacing would even exist if interlaced sources were fine as they are, and neither would digital, analog would still rule. Dunno what deinterlacing you've been using, but quality loss is minimal (if at all noticeable) on a standard TV when I use Telecide.

I have to agree with Swan. If I deinterlace, I get some quality decrease. I never deinterlace, and the only reason why to do it, is if you watch your SVCDs on PC-Monitor.
I made some tests and I can see a difference on my TV in quality if I deinterlace. The movie is still watchable and still better than VHS, but is worse then if I leave it interlaced.

It's not an opinion, it's a fact.;)
To reverse the effects of telecining (bringing back the progressive frames from a source that was shot with a film camera and then telecined) and to deinterlace is not the same thing!
What I'm talking about is deinterlacing truly interlaced material and then outputting it to a TV. That is *always destructive*. The deinterlaced video will not look as good as the interlaced video it was created from. If you understand what deinterlacing is, then you'll also understand that it is destructive.
I only deinterlace interlaced stuff that I want to encode to DivX or Xvid because those files typically have to have a vertical resolution below 576 if they are to fit on a CD. I'd never deinterlace if I were to create an SVCD. I use the decomb avisynth filter, btw.

When Should I Deinterlace?
As I mentioned earlier, each field in an interlaced video comes from a different point in time. Therefore, interlaced video can be thought of as running at 60 fields/sec or 50 fields/sec rather than 30 fps or 25 fps. An interlaced display is capable of displaying each field separately. Because of this, an interlaced video will play much more smoothly than a progressive video when using an interlaced display. Therefore, if you're planning to watch your output video on a TV (through an SVCD, for example), it's best to leave your video as interlaced.
On the other hand, if you want to watch your video on a progressive computer monitor, it's a good idea to deinterlace your video. Because a progressive display updates both fields of a frame at once, you won't see the increased smoothness of interlaced video that occurs on an interlaced display. Instead you'll see interlacing artifacts, which don't look very good. That's why it's recommended to deinterlace your video if you'll be watching it on a computer.

Now, since there is a way to avoid deinterlacing when creating an SVCD from an interlaced source (watching the Mpeg-2 with a software DVD player that can turn deinterlacing on and off), why deinterlace? It just doesn't make sense. If you leave the video interlaced, you can watch it on the TV with great quality and on the computer monitor, using WinDVD for example, as well. If you deinterlace it will not look good on the TV. No matter what method you use to deinterlace an interlaced source, it is a destructive process and it will look bad when you output the material on a TV.

I apologize for appearing confused, but its because I'm new to this and I am :-)
If I don't deinterlace an NTSC source (DVD2AVI shows it as NTSC, not film) the result with no deinterlace and DVD2SVCD is that any motion is jerky on my standalone Apex 1500 and standard TV (and CCE drops down to about .7~.8). I'm using multipass (3) with CCE and a max bitrate of 2230.
Am i missing an obvious setting? I don't have the last log from an NTSC DVD, but I can recreate one if needed.

When encoding a film, force film converts it to 23.976, instead of the 29.970. So leaving force film off, would leave a few extra frames to encode. Which would cause the speed decrease in CCE.
As for deinterlacing, um... I agree with swan, it decreases quality. Considering it compresses more frames. I like IVTC or force film, because encoding at 23.976 results in a better quality output than leaving it interlaced.
