I tried to rip a DVD that is 98 minutes long. I just ripped the movie and ac3 sountrack, but it wont fit on one DVD-R. After ripping it takes up 4.39GB. It states on the DVD-R that the capacity is 120 minutes. Why wont this 98 minute movie fit on one DVD-R? Is there a rule of thumb on how many ripped minutes would fit on one DVD-R?

A typical DVD-R has 4,37GB capacity. 120 minutes is just an average runtime of the DVD.
The DVD-R will have 120 minutes duration if you use a total bitrate of about 5200kbps.
So it all depends on the bitrate!
If you use maximal bitrate (10080kbps), it will hold only 62 minutes.
If you use VCD bitrate (1374kbps), you can put 447 minutes on it!!
