i have 2 pcs: one is pIII 800 mgz.
recently i buy a P4 1.7
i think that this pc would be faster than the first one,
but: surprise: the p3 is fasther than the p4 using the same settings on dvd2svcd
why??
is there a limit of speed or something?
both pcs make a movie in 10-12 hours and i see in the cce the speed: .800 (more or less), but i think that the p4 can be faster!

If you have a good PIII-system with a good Motherboard-Chipset and fast RAM, and a PIV-system with some of this $&@§# SDRAM-Chipsets and less quantity of RAM, there will be be many applications which run faster on the PIII.

The original P4 core sucked beyond most anything you could believe. A good number of PIIIs, all Athlon XPs, and many TBirds could outperform the original P4 in almost every aspect, every time. That's just the way it is. You'd be much wiser to just get an AMD system, especially since you aren't going for the best-there-is. The P4 may have the advantage in multimedia tasks, but the original P4-core (everything before P4-2A) even lost in this category to the Athlon XP.

I congratulate Intel on the performance of their newest chips, and on the rate they are reeling them out. It is still rather humerous, though, that even at such high clock speeds, their chips are so un-optimized deepdown, that they perform equal to an AMD chip with 1ghz less clock speed. For the time being, the best performer is the P4 2.8ghz, soon to be followed by 3ghz. That will all change when hammer rolls around, let me be the first to guarantee you of that :)
