I managed to burn a couple of movies correctly but my new laptop(XP) won't recognize the disk as having anything on it. A friend has an older laptop with the same DVD-ROM drive(same manufacturer-same model-same drivers-same version) and my disk works perfectly in his - the movie open right up in Power DVD. My D drive says there nothing in my drive and when I try Power DVD it says "no disk in drive" when there is a disk with a full movie in it. Tried the disk in other DVD standalones and it works with them. Am I missing a driver or codec to be able to read the disks with my laptop?

I think it's hardware problem. Some DVD drives don't like to read cheap CD-Rs. Once I burnt CDs with full of softwares, my DVD drive couldn't recognise anything but it worked fine with other CD drives and DVD drives. Even you said "same manufacturer-same model-same drivers-same version" it may be considered as different DVD drive. Some of my friends own Compaq Presario 1700. All of them bough in different years. How can you tell that the hardwares, which Compaq manufactured were still the same? AFAIK every notebook will be discontinued by 2 months due to new technologies have been replaced.

You may want to try use different and better brands of CD-Rs. Cheap one is economically good but use better brand to avoid incompatible issues.
