I suddenly can't make 'standalone player' compatable disks. What have I done wrong??

I thought that I had the 'art' of ripping/stripping DVDs down sussed, but clearly I havn't.

I have just done 3 disks all with a differnent amount of ripping/stripping.

1. Original split into 2 disks keeping the menus

2. Just movie stipping some audio and vobs with IfoEdit creating new VIDEO_TS.IFO and VTS_01_0.IFO (so that there is no menu)

3. Just the movie, with no stripping done, but IfoEdit creating a new VIDEO_TS.IFO and VTS_01_0.IFO (So that there is no menu)

WHilst this is my first 'split into 2 disks' project, the other types of disks I have done many times before.

Before I started burning, I tested the VIDEO_TS directory using PowerDVD and it played fine.

So, I burned the disk in the same way as always (RecordNOW 4.1).

I tested the fist disk and it didn't work on my Pioneer or Samsung DVD player.. This didn't really suprise me as it was quite a complicated 'project'.

I then tested the 2nd disk and that didn't work either.. This worried me, as it should work.. I only stripped out a few audio tracks and VOBs.

But still I put it down to user error.. The last disk should work as I did nothing to it other than create new IFO files.

To my horror.. This didn't work either..

What could I have done wrong. I don't think that I am doing anything wrong, as I have done this countless times before.

Incidently, the original VIDEO_TS directory plays from the hard-drive and I can play the burned disk using PowerDVD, so it seems that IFOEdit is doing its job.

It just wont' play on the standalone players. It may be RecordNOW which is to blame.

I don't believe that this is media realated, but it could be.

Does anyone have ANY ideas where I can start.

Maybe stupid question, but did you press "Get VTS sectors" just before burn ????

Indeed I did.. Everything was done as it was before, but they just don't work.

The only thing I have done which is kind of related is.

1. Upgraded from Nero 5.5.9.0 to 5.5.9.9.

However, I don't use Nero at the moment, so I can't see how this would affect it.. But you never know.

2. Upgraded my A04 firmware to 1.31.. After problems, I put it back down to 1.20 again.


Other than that, nothing has changed.

Tonight, i will do a test with Nero.. Other than that, I have no idea!

Indeed I did. 'Get VTS Setors' was done and files re-saved.. I also removed P-Ups from all of the IFOs, however in the case of the disks that I created so that they just play, there are no P-UPs to remove.

Everything was done as it was before, but they just don't work.

The only things I have done which is kind of related is.

Looks like its a RecordNOW problem.

Just did a burn with Nero and it plays fine.

Problem is that Nero disks don't play on Toshiba players and the New Pioneer 454.

Something must have changed with RecordNOW, as it worked perfectly before.

Will have to reinstall and see if I can fix it. Otherwise, its back to Nero and Toshiba/Pioneer unfriendly disks!

If anyone knows anything about RecordNow which might help me, I would be interested to hear.

try to disable the "recognize the VIDEO_TS and ... specifcation" in
tools/options/data disc, but first test it with an RW.
Another option is to create an image with ifoedit/imagetools, but you shouldn't have more than 76 files because it seems that the image funct. has probs to handle more files correctly.

I already had the "Recognize VIDEO_TS and ... specifcation" option set to OFF because I tried to burn a disk and I was told that the files were not correct, even though they were.

At first, I thought that this was the problem, as this was the only thing I had changed.. However, I went back to a disk I did last week, but never tested and that had the same problem.

Never heard of 'imagetools' before.. I will have to take a look and see what you are referring to...

I think I will concentrate on getting RecordNOW to work before I start using something else though.

I now realise how grateful I am for DVD-RW technology, or I would be wasting so many DVD-Rs.

I am not so sure that its as simple as I thought!

I burned a few disks with Nero and it worked perfectly.

I then burned some disks that had never been anywhere near IFOEdit before using RecordNOW... They worked too.

Then I finally tried some of the new disks that I have done using IFOEdit and they wont' work.

NOw I think about, I havn't done many disks using IFOEdit and RecordNOW.. Infact, thinking back, i don't think any of the ones I had previously burned had been near IFOEdit.. One was Authored by me from DV footage.. One was a direct copy of a DVD-5, the other was a disk with some of the unused VOBs removed.

Perhaps RecordNOW isn't all its cracked up to be...

It seems like IFOEdit is doing something which makes RecordNOW burn non-complient disks.

I guess I will have to try InstantDVD again and see how that is.

as i was reading down the thread i was wondering if u had upgraded your firmware. And indeed u did. Apparently Pionneer has disabled the ability to write cheap media succesfully. In another thread I read that optodisks refuse to be standalone compatible after burnt in an upgraded A04. That could be your case.

It was not clear if u burn at 2x. Perhaps burning at 1x solves your problem? Just a suggestion.

I've used nero 5.5.9.9 to burn.

When the wizard pop up choose DVD Video format not data...........!

but I still can get a back up to play in (stand alone player) for more than 55 minutes.

Nero has never caused me a problem.. Its never stopped working.. However Neros disks don't play on a Toshiba 510 or the new Pioneer 454 players.

The whole point of my post, was that I am trying to find an application other than Nero.

However.. It turns out that my original problem was caused by me not doing 'GET_VTS_SECTORS' before burning.

Now I have done this, I can burn using Nero, RecordNOW and Gear.

I am going to stick with RecordNOW, as its disks play on EVERY standalone that I have access too.. Where as Nero's disks don't play on a few players (see above)
