View Full Version : Re-designing the Page?

Hi,
I took a look at your page and the "Voluteer"-section - i saw you're always interested in new designs and logos for the page. Well, I didn't change the hole page-layout because I like your non-complicated structure and navy but I added some new graphics including big graphical head-line.
So take a look at it - maybe you'll enjoy it ;) - It's also compatible with resolutions above 1024x768.
Please tell me, what you think about it. If you're interesed in using my work you would do me a great favor.
Thx,
M@ze (greetz from Germany)

Not bad  The whole design looks like Windows XP Application. I like the left-column menu. It looks like paper.

Hi OperatorD3D,
greets from Germany, too. :D
It's also compatible with resolutions above 1024x768.
That's certainly not a problem using a bigger resolution for websites. Or did you mean "below 1024*768"?
Nice design. What also matters is browser support. It has to work in IE 5.x and up (should not be a problem) and Mozilla 1.x and with all the latest browser like NS7 and Opera-support would certainly be nice, too.
I'm in charge of the German Doom9, so I'm interested in this, too.
As a sidenote, I'd remove these movie covers from the top logo as this is a possible source of legal problems.

Hi Scipio,
because you said, higher resolutions don't matter: They really do, if there is a color-shade which i.e. exist in my page. You cannot repeat the hole graphic, it would look quit fucked up and there wouldn't exist a real transition.
That's what I wanted to add.
Second: I guess my html + css-codes are compatible with all browsers because i think the new version of netscape and maybe also the older ones really can handle css (I haven't tried it out yet).
Who can dicide if my version of the page can be taken ? And how about finding out, if the movie-covers will violate any copyright ?
Thx, Matthias

Ah, you're right. I only thought of simpler designs like Doom9's ;) where size is pretty irrelevant (You can view it in 1600*1200 and up with no problems.)
On Doom9.de I had a problem getting the menu banner to work on lower resolutions (it's still only really viewable in vertical dimensions of 768+, I used an image-map so you don't have to scroll in the menu. That's why I'm more concerned with low resolutions... sorry).

This decision would be up to Doom9 himself.
There will be no finding out, I guess. I'm pretty sure these movie covers are no option for him due to possible legal actions that could be taken by some large organizations we all know... There was a similar thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=33363) with a request for a forum for certain movie titles. But I can't speak for Doom9 in your case, my judgement/assumption is based on previous decisions here...
and @ your 2nd point: great if the CSS etc. works with all new browser revisions, that's always a plus.

you once sent me that design and I have to apologize for not responding. It's pretty nice but my first impression wasn't "that's it and I don't want anything else".
So atm I'm still undecided...

I'd like to have a copy of the html, too (if you don't mind).

It's okay - maybe I should change something... I don't know exactly what but if you guys have an idea, just tell me and I'll see what I can do.
@ Doom9: I have been waiting for an answer for 2 weeks... so it would have been good to tell me that you're not sure/not that interested.
The HTML-Code can be found @ http://home.arcor-online.de/albert.mayr/doom9 on sunday.

Perhaps you could make a multi-lingual approach to the site-design?
Better integration of the mature translation-projects would be nice. This "Translations in progress: X Y Z" is just a beta design done by Doom9 when he announced these projects. One remark, though: If you do so, make sure you leave room for extensions, that is future projects that may arise.
"that's it and I don't want anything else".
That's why Doom9 still hasn't a logo.
Always longing for perfection where there can't be none... :p
My 0.02€: Your front page design would refresh the current design without much effort or restructuring. In Y2k2, Doom9's design looks a bit outdated, but he can still argue that quality counts, not design. :)
