Chapter Numbering on Disk 2

Sorry for this newbie question, I just started using IfoEdit. I guess I was able to successfully split 1 DVD folder into 2 (seems to work fine so far).

But what I am still struggling with is adjusting the chapter numbering on folder/disk 2, so it continues to count from the last number of folder/disk 1 onwards.

I am sure it was asked and explained already several times in this forum, but I could not find anything that explained it in those simple terms I still need. I really would appreciate if you could point me in the right direction.

If you're using the newest version of IfoEdit v0.932
you don't need to adjust anything manualy on the chapters!

It should perfectly work like it is. Okay, it looks a bit strange if you look at the VTS_Overview, but that is normal.
It should look like this:

Chapter 01 .......
Chapter 23 .......
Chapter 24 .......

The Disc must start at a Chapter 1, or it won't be played at all!
In fact, inside the Chapter-table (PTT_SRPTI), all chapters from chapter 1 to 21 are simply pointing to Cell 1.
Chapter 22 is pointing to Cell 22 and so on...

So in the overview, you will see chapter 22 as chapter 1, but that is okay.
The disc should play chapter 22, when you select it from the chapter-menu of the DVD.

This was the only way to preserve the original chapter pointing, so that the chapter-menu still will work.
So never mind about the strange chapter-numbering on the 2nd Disc.

please report just errors, if you select chapter 23, and it plays chapter 22.

That would be not so good.
In such a case, I would need to do some debuging.

Ok Derrow, I've got something for you.

I had the chapter problem before and I managed to work it out but manually (and after a long time battle)...

After splitting and doing everything by the guides, I was NEVER able to select the correct chapter in the DVD menu (2nd disc).

Yes, I am using Ifoedit 0.932...

I found out that in VTS_PGC_1 (inside VTS_PGCITI of the main movie IFO - 2nd disc), there were not enough program numbers...

Explanation:
Let's suppose the movie is split in 20-20 chapters.
In VTS_PGC_1, below "PGC Command Table" there is a correct linking between what you "press" on the menu and what "program" it should play... BUT, just below that in "PGC Program Map" you only have programs for the chapters included in that disc.

So "PGC Program Map" will look like this:
Program_1: Entry cell number 1
Program_2: Entry cell number 2
...
Program_20: Entry cell number 20

Cell numbers are fine (because you only have 20 cells on that disc) BUT Program numbers are not. If you look above in "PGC Command Table" you'll see that Program_3 (for example) is linked to chapter 3 button in the DVD Menu and it SHOULDN'T since we're in disc 2 and Program_3 should be linked to chapter 23...

Please note that we're talking of Chapter selection in the Menu of the movie itself, NOT directly on the DVD player.

So how did I managed to make it work?
Since chapter 23 is linked to program_23 (in "PGC Command Table") I manually inserted 20 Programs (the amount of chapters in Disc 1) in "PGC Program Map"...
How?
Right click in Program_1 and select "Insert Program". Do this 20 times THEN change the cell numbers of those newly 20 Programs to 1 (so if you select chapter 1-20 it will always play the first chapter in disc 2).

So now you have "PGC Program Map" like this:
Program_1: Entry cell number 1
Program_2: Entry cell number 1
...
Program_20: Entry cell number 1
Program_21: Entry cell number 1
Program_22: Entry cell number 2
...
Program_39: Entry cell number 19
Program_40: Entry cell number 20

DON'T forget to SAVE...

And it WORKS! :D

Sorry for the big post but I hope a lot of people end up doing it right this way...

Maybe you'll be able to correct this in a future Ifoedit.

This is what I've been looking for. Solved my problem. For some reason every disk I make the chapter menu is off by one chapter. On disk one both chapter 1 and 2 in the menu play chapter 1 and then chapter 3 plays actual chapter 2 and so on. On disk 2 the chapters continue to be off by one so that accessing the end credits is not possible. Well the original rip with smart ripper shows 21 chapters but disk one and two show 22 chapter.

to solve the problem I just went to PTT_SRPTI and selected the first PGCN and clicked delete chapter. Now it shows that there are 21 chapters and the PGCN 1 = 1 and PGCN 2 = 2 and so forth. Rather than PGCN 1 = 1 and PGCN 2 = 1 and PGCN 3 = 2..... You get the idea. Anyways my chapter menus work perfectly now. Thanx!!

Derrow.. is there a reason I consistently have this problem? No one else seems to but I've had this happen with my first 4 disks so far. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

This is my first post in this great forum. Actually, it's been quite tough waiting for 5 days before being able to post... :rolleyes:

Anyway. I would like to propose another workaround about this issue, since I faced it as well.

I discovered that this problem occurs only when I selected the split on or before the layer change, and only when the original layer change is done between 2 chapters.

When looking at the matrix proposed by IFOEdit for selecting the split point, we can often see a kind of dummy chapter between 2 chapters, which represents the layer change. IFOEdit selects this point by default. In keeping this selection, or in selecting the true chapter point immediately before this dummy chapter, the chapter list of disk 2 is shifted by 1, because I guess this dummy chapter is understood as a true chapter then...

However, in selecting the first true chapter immediately AFTER this dummy chapter the problem disappears.

Ya actually I tried that. it didn't seem to make a difference. I just tried Jurassic park 2 and now all of the chapter menus are off by 2 on both disks. I don't think my orginal work around is going to work with this one. I don't really understand fully the problem. Is anyone else having this problem. I have yet to split into 2 dvd's and have the menus work correctly.

Actually, I must add something I experimented this week-end...

I faced another issue in trying to backup Stars Wars Episode I. The IFO file (of the movie) is full of cells in between chapters, just like the one I was talking about in my previous post for the layer change. Many things I tried created this behavior of having a chapter shifted by 1 in the second disk.

Only one prevented the issue :

- You have to select a split point when there's no cell neither before nor after the selected chapter. In other words you have to find 3 consecutive chapters with no other cell in between, and select the middle one.

In that case there's no problem (well... in my case :p )

Otherwise, it's just like IFOEdit screw up somewhere, and after the chapter 1 puts the theoritical chapter number+1.

I'm sure Derrow will fix that soon ;)

Sorry, indeed there seems to be a small bug.

I did a DVD-split on the weekend too, and had also the prob, that the chapters on disc2 were off by +1.

I couldn't locate the bug by now, but a solution for this prob is, simply delete a chapter in the chapter table.

To be exact, there are a few chapters, that are pointing to PGC-Nr. 1 Program 1, in the table PTT_SRPTI.

Simply delete one of them, and it is fixed. ;)

So if I do Ebo's trick of splitting at the "right" point will the chapters still be off by +1?

it works..altho iam pretty sure its not the right way to assign chapters.
This way we chapter second half of the movie, which is now on dvd 2 according to cell lengths of the first part.
If you'll compare with original dvd, assigned chapter will start different from where they supposed to start. In some cases it wont be that far, but once i had mine in the middle of an action scene.

Ive tried to adjust some values:
In menu IFO VTSM_PGCI_UT

Set GPreg<4> mov (set-val)<3330> (last one = 3330)
By shifting this one u could adjust chapter start point.
Ive been busting my head to find what and where they are (from navpacks perhaps).
