Sorry for the delay in replying...my modem packed up !!!!
I don't want to just whine about coasters and i really appreciate your offers of help.
The blanks i am using are Mirror DVD-R at £3.00 each.
I am trying to back up resident evil ( region 1 )onto 4.7 gb disc with the just the menu and the movie.
I am following the guides on the ifoedit pages and have printed them off to work too.
first i ripped the movie with Cladvd XP
then found the files to keep using ifoedit.
if i copied the files neccesary they played in ifoedit. ( IE> the title loaded...i selected the movie to play then it started.)
the whole file size was a little to large to write so i used ifoedit to remove 1 of the language tracks.
when finished i corrected the VTS sectors after restarting ifoedit.
when i tried to play the image i got the message.
" no valid dvd-volume could be located " then it said do you want to continue.
The title screen played but no movie.
I wrote the disc but it wont play in either my pc or my dvd player.
I tried to burn the disc first with nero but the file size was just over 4.7gb.
i then used the demo version of vov instant cd/dvd.
I have followed the instructions to the letter as far as i can see but i must be doing something wrong.
I have copied a region 1 dvd under 4.7gb using dvdecrypter and it worked fine.
i can't seem to get my head around dvd's bigger than 4.7gb.
( but the resident evil vob files play off the disc in my software player if i play them 1 at a time. )
I have made 3 coasters actually not 4 the first 2 trying to back up monsters inc after rempeg - ingto a lower bit rate.
(this was a bit daunting so i switched to trying a different movie. )
I can't always check the board each night so i may take a day or so to reply.
any tuition with this would be most grateful i you wish to e-mail me please use stendhal_uk@yahoo.com
yours sincerely

First off, why create a new thread with the same title instead of replying to the original one you made? You have made 3 posts to this forum, all regarding your trouble ripping Resident Evil, and you have started a new thread for each post. That is seen as a rather rude thing to do on a forum.
Regarding your problem, I just have to tell you that IfoEdit's preview does work, so it is INSANE to continue burning coaster after coaster. You KNOW that the movie has no chance of working, because it doesn't play in IfoEdit.
Follow the guides. Try ripping with DVD Decrypter and burning with DVD Decrypter, like the guides say. Don't burn with Nero. For that matter, don't burn with anything until you get the movie to work right from your hard drive. Your problem seems to be with IfoEdit, but you have not given nearly enough information to diagnose it, so all I can say is follow every single step of the IfoEdit stripping guide:
http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/ifoedit-menustripping.htm
Are you having trouble following a part of the guide? I know that using VOBRator/IfoEdit was really the only thing I found to be confusing at first when I started burning DVD's. The explanations in the guide aren't really any good... The VOBRator guide and the IfoEdit guide should at least use the same movie for their examples, because the way it is written now is fairly useless. Anyway, don't start skipping steps that you don't understand.

sorry for making new post about the same thing..I didn't realize it was the inpropper thing to do.
I will do as you say and will use dvdecryptor to rip and burn and will let you know how i get on.
I take it after ripping i still will use ifoedit to remove the extra language track before making the image to burn ( to reduce overall file size.?
thanks for the advice

Yeah, you still need to use VOBrator to find your VOB ID's then IfoEdit to strip out the audio you don't need.
I've gotta return some DVD's later this week, so I'll probably just rent Resident Evil and see if there is anything strange about it...

I have reprinted the guide on these pages to follow.
using dvdecrypter to rip the region 1 dvd, i get the message
" media region code is missmatched to logical unit region "
I have a UK bought pioneer dvr-104
Using drive info program i find the drive is region code protected ( region 2 )not permanent.
with firmware 1.30
should i flash my drive with firmware 1.31 from www.firmware.fr.st
i have downloaded this firmware onto a floppy disc, but there are no instructions to follow and i don't want to destroy my drive before i start.
please guide me in the right direction.

I have ripped resident evil using ifoedit as told.
this ripped correctly.
i loaded the video_ts.ifo in ifoedit, and got the files to keep.
i then stripped the extra audio files using ifoedit.and created new ifo files.( finishing by correcting the vob pointers. )
i then copied the following files into the video_ts directory that ifoedit processed the files.
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_01_0.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
i checked the disc for region free. ( OK )
i removed user option prohibitions. ( OK )
i closed then re-opened ifoedit & then did the get vts sectors.( OK )
NOW I LOADED THE VIDEO_TS.IFO FILE IN IFOEDIT AND THE MOVIE PLAYED WITH NO TITLE SCREENS ETC.
the files are in a folder named VIDEO_TS ( in uppercase )
i have included an empty folder called AUDIO_TS ( in uppercase. )
On to burning.
using nero 5599 i chose DVD-ROM ( udf/iso ) and unchecked the joliet option.
all settings are as the guide on the ifoedit pages.
i dragged the VIDEO_TS folder to the project and the empty AUDIO_TS folder.
disc burned fine.
DISC WON'T PLAY IN STANDALONE PLAYER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I KNOW YOU SAID GET A DVD-RW DISC TO PRACTICE WITH BUT I HAVEN'T HAD TIME YET.
SO ANOTHER COASTER IS BORN.
WHAT AM I DOING WRONG ???? I THOUGHT I'D CRACKED IT WHEN IT PLAYED IN
IFOEDIT.
I COULDN'T GET IFOEDIT TO BURN AN IMAGE FOR DVDECRYPTER WHEN I CHOSE A DRIVE LETTER IT SAYS INVALID PARAMETER FOR WHATEVER DRIVE LETTER I CHOOSE.( USING VIDEO_TS.IFO )
THEN IT ERRORS SAYING CAN'T LOCATE imglib.dll
please help

stendhal_uk,
You need to install IMGtool. This can be found on the doom9 download section. (Under VOB Tools (show me more)
Make sure you put it in the same directory as Ifoedit.
It's as simple as that. From there you should be able to burn an image file.
I use DVD Factory, but there are lots of other tools available as well.

The region of your burner shouldn't matter if you've made the movie region-free with IfoEdit, right? You really might not want to be using Nero to burn things... I've seen people complain about it making incompatible DVD's no matter what version you use, so you might as well use one of the simple little programs that's made specifically for burning DVD's. I just ripped Resident Evil R1, so if you're still wondering, here's how I did it:
Load up DVD Decrypter. Main feature is auto-selected, so rip it to E:\RESIDENT_EVIL\VIDEO_TS\.
Create directories D:\RESIDENT_EVIL\VIDEO_TS and D:\RESIDENT_EVIL\AUDIO_TS.
Open VTS_02_0.IFO with IfoEdit. Hit VOB Extras, Destination = D:\RESIDENT_EVIL\VIDEO_TS, hit OK, check all streams, Srip it, check the single VOB ID, Strip it. (I know this isn't really necessary, but I somehow feel safer just doing it the same way I always do instead of renaming VOB's). Wait 10 minutes... It will warn you that VIDEO_TS.IFO doesn't exist (since you only ripped the main part), but it doesn't matter.
Open ImgTools, select source dir D:\RESIDENT_EVIL\, make drive K:, click DVD Image, DVD Drive = K, Output Image File = E:\RESIDENT_EVIL.img, Volume Title = RESIDENT_EVIL. Click Create Disc Image. It comes out to 4,674,347,008 bytes. (I love that little "Good news!" box :)).
Open Prassi PrimoDVD, click "Global Image or Other Image" button, Disc Image File = E:\RESIDENT_EVIL.img, Go!

Thanks for advice.
I just made dvd-rw of resident evil ( region 1 )
It plays fine in my standalone player.
I have just tried to do a dvd copy of this to a dvd-r.
both instant cd/dvd and nero refuse to do a copy of the rw disc ?
I created the disc using dvdecrypter after using IMGtools.
to get this far...what am i NOW doing wrong.?
Another question ?
This is how i did the current disc.
RIPPED RESIDENT EVIL WITH DVDECRYPTER ( ALL FILES )
STRIPPED THE MOVIE FILES WITH IFOEDIT LEAVING JUST THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE TRACK.
THEN CORRECTED VTS SECTORS
THEN I COPIED THE FOLLOWING FILES FROM THE COMPLETE RIP.
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_0.VOB
IS THIS THE RIGHT THING TO DO ????
IMAGE FILES PLAYED BACK IN IFOEDIT'S PLAYER SO I PRESUME IT IS CORRECT.
I THEN CREATED A DVD IMAGE USING IMGTOOL
THEN BURNED TO DVD-RW USING DVDECRYPTER
I WAS GOING TO COPY THE DVD-RW ONTO A DVD-R,
THEN EACH TIME I RIP A DVD, DO IT TO THE DVD-RW DISC BEFORE COPYING TO DVD-R SO I DON'T MAKE ANYMORE COASTERS.
CAN YOU COPY DVD-RW TO DVD-R ? IF SO WHAT PROGRAM SHOULD I USE.
( PRASSI PRIMO DVD DOESN'T RECOGNISE MY DVD BURNER. )
SO CLOSE ........ YET SO FAR !!!!!!

Hi,
Managed to get another version of Prassi primodvd...it works.
can you please talk me through writing the image created with
imgtool using primodvd.
QUESTION
If the VIDEO_TS folder i have stripped plays in IFOedit,
can it be written to disc and play in my standalone.
ie. drag VIDEO_TS & AUDIO_TS ( empty )into primodvd ?
what settings would i need.
also how can i make my drive region free in the firmware.
i have tried the firmware upgrade on www.firmware.fr.st but my drive is still locked to region 2
( says not permanent though ? )
i have a pioneer dv-r 104
i have also got ulead dvd factory installed.

If you have created an Image, use DVD Factory to burn it.
Programmes don't come any easier.

Have succesfully created backup of movie only for :
STUART LITTLE
RESIDENT EVIL
Ripped using DVD Decrypter.
stripped VOB's using IFOedit.
Burned with Prassi Primo DVD.
BY GEORGE I THINK I'VE FINALLY GOT IT !!!!!!!!!!
My next step is to encode Monsters Inc at a lower bit rate using REMpeg2 and burn that to DVD-R.
I'll let you all know how i get on.
Thanks to Homer J & Brett for all their help.
If all goes well I think I'll do a guide of the process I have used and post It on a web page for new starters like myself.
