If you make VCDs, use TMPGEnc. MPEG-1 encoding is free:)

@Abond: The comparison is between MPEG-2 and DivX. MPEG-2 is used for SVCDs, not VCDs.

TMPGEnc sucks in MPEG-2 compared to CCE, but beats it in MPEG-1. This is not just my opinion, there's a lot of people who feel the same way.

i know people will argue with me but why still use mpeg1? i can understand if the cost of mpeg2 software is a factor, but quality is incereased 10 fold (IMO) winth mpeg2. i can see no real advantage using vcd's instead of svcd's. unless your standalone will only play vcd.

I create VCDs sometimes when I for example want to get those extras on DVD to one CD-R. I also create VCDs when the bitrate would be rather low as I think that standard VCDs are better than low bitrate SVCDs.

If you checked out some of the MPEG-1 KVCD templates at www.kvcd.net , you'd see why MPEG-1 is still going strong;) The quality is simply amazing when you think that you'll get approximately 120 minutes of MPEG-1 video on one 80min CD-R disc! Provided that your standalone player is compatible...
