How to detect if a source is interlaced or progressive before encoding ?

Hi!

i've got a relative simple question, but noone here in the forum seems to have it answered yet ;)
Is it possible to detect wheter a video-source is progressive or interlaced before encoding ?
I just went through RoseRed PAL RC2 DVD, and there is one scene (in about 4h movie) which seems to be interlaced! So far so good, but Bitrate-Viewer says: Progressive...
Another example:
What Women Want PAL RC2... i'm almost perfectly sure that the video is progressive, but Bitrateview says: No ..interlaced !
Okay i know that Bitrateview just tells you, what is written inthe mpeg-header and that brings me back to my question:
Is there any tool out there, which scans the vobs and could tell us, if a source is progressive or interlaced ??

use DVD2AVI. I think that bitrate viewer just takes the first frame and if that frame is interlaced it says the whole movie is. This doesn't help much because the first couple seconds is often interlaced cos of the cinema logos and such.


The best way to tell is to preview it in DVD2AVI. I think you can also use virtual dub but I never have tried that way before.

Use Bitrate Viewer and load the VTS_0X_2.VOB. That has always worked for me since you are getting a description of the middle of the movie.
