DVD-9 to 2 DVD-5 FULL COPY INSTRUCTIONS

*Notes- This guide will work with 95-99% of all DVDs that are "dual layered" and need to be split to 2 DVDs. This guide provides a step by step process that gives you a complete 1-1 copy of the movie, but nothing else. It will not produce the menus , and extras but will make a perfect copy of the movie. It is recommended that you get the EXACT versions of the software listed below, because that is what works and contains the features and steps that are detailed in this guide. This guide is written so that beginners can easily follow it, and produce their first DVDs. It is easy, straightforward, and requires very little software. As well, if you have enough RAM, you will be able to be working on three different movies at once; i.e… Burning a movie, processing a different movie, and ripping a different a movie. After 5-10 movies, you will not need the guide and will zip right through all the steps. This guide has more steps, and more detail, so that inexperienced users can easily follow it, and learn how to do this. Please read all the steps carefully. If you get sidetracked, or something looks wrong, then backtrack through the steps to see if you did something different. Do NOT skip any steps or you will be burning a drink coaster.

*Hardware Needed- Buy the fastest computer you can afford. Buy the largest hard drive you can afford. Doing a DVD-9 split requires about 15-18 gigs of space all by itself, as the movie is copied, and split, twice. A 80-100 gig drive is recommended if you are doing multiple movies at once. For your burner I recommend Pioneer A04, and DVD-R format. This is a huge debate, and a entirely different discussion, but that's what im using, and that is what works for me.

*Software Needed- IfoEdit 0.9.3.2, Smartripper 2.42, Record Now Max 4.11, PowerDVD. You CAN do this with Windows ME. A lot of people knock Windows ME, and say it is trash compared to Windows XP and 2000, and that windows ME cant handle this. I have been using Windows ME exclusively while doing this, and had no problems. This again is a different discussion that isn't necessary to go into here. Ok, lets begin- The movie used, for our example is Excalibur.

Index-
1. Ripping Movie
2. Add VIDEO_TS file
3. Adding Dummy VOB File(s)
4. Reprocessing with IfoEdit
5. Testing the Movie
6. Burn to DVD-R

Section 1. Ripping the Movie

Step 1. Insert your DVD movie to be copied into your DVD drive.
Step 2. On your hard drive, create a blank folder and name it the same title as your movie to be copied.
Step 3. Inside of the folder we created in step 2, create the following blank folders "Rip 1", "Rip 2", "Movie 1", and "Movie 2".
Step 4. Open Smart Ripper 2.41
Step 5. Smart Ripper should automatically detect your movie, and decrypt it showing you a list of the contents of the DVD. Select the "movie button" in the top left corner.
Step 6. Under the input tab of the source screen, check the first half of the chapters, and uncheck the second half of the chapters, in the "chapters" window. As you do this, the cells information might change, this doesn't matter.
Step 7. Click the Steam Processing Tab. Make sure the "enable stream processing" box is checked. Make sure the "direct stream processing" button is checked. In the streams window, you will see all the different video/audio streams associated with the movie. A good rule of thumb here is - leave them ALL checked, unless you are 101% sure its something you don't need. If you know you don't want French, or Spanish soundtrack, then uncheck it. And if you don't care about the directors comments, then you can uncheck that. By unchecking some of the streams we can reduce the overall file size, and occasionally squeeze all the data onto 1 disc, but this is rare. Unfortunately, if it looks like its going to be close, there is no way to know if it will squeeze in under 4.3gig, until AFTER you have reprocessed everything. In time you will be able to predict this, and know whether to rip to 1 folder, or 2 so you can burn to only 1 disc. Our example here, Excalibur will be going on to 2 discs.
Step 8. In the target field, navigate to the Rip 1 folder on your harddrive inside of the movie folder.
Step 9. Everything in the "settings" should be the default setting, and work with your movie. I have never changed anything in the settings. Click Start and wait for rip to finish.
Step 10. When rip is finished, close Smartripper, then re-open Smartripper.
Step 11. Smart Ripper should automatically detect your movie, and decrypt it showing you a list of the contents of the DVD. Select the "movie button" in the top left corner.
Step 12. Under the input tab of the source screen, check the second half of the chapters, and uncheck the first half of the chapters, in the "chapters" window. As you do this, the cells information might change, this doesn't matter.
Step 13. Same as step 7.
Step 14. In the target field, navigate to the Rip 2 folder on your harddrive inside of the movie folder.
Step 15. Everything in the "settings" should be the default setting, and work with your movie. I have never ever changed anything in the settings. Click Start and wait for rip to finish.
Step 16. When rip is finished, close Smartripper.

Section 2. Adding VIDEO_TS Files.

Step 17. Double click "my computer" and navigate to your DVD drive that contains the original DVD disc. Right click, and then select explore. Double click on the VIDEO_TS folder. Right click on the VIDEO_TS.IFO file. Select copy. Open the movie folder on your desktop. Open the Rip 1 Folder. Select Paste. Then right click on the VIDEO_TS.IFO file that was just copied to the Rip 1 Folder, and select properties. Then Uncheck all the boxes under attributes, and apply. Do NOT forget this Step.
Step 18. Open the Rip 2 Folder. Select Paste. Then right click on the VIDEO_TS.IFO file that was just copied to the Rip 2 Folder, and select properties. Then Uncheck all the boxes under attributes, and apply. Close the Rip 2 Folder.

Section 3. Adding DummyVOB Files

Step 19. Open Notepad. (start/programs/accessories). Then save a blank file to your desktop. Do you not type any text in the file. Save the file as DummyVOB.txt
Step 20. Right Click on DummVOB.txt, and then select copy. Then navigate to your Movie Folder on your desktop, and open the Rip 2 folder. You will notice that that VOB's, the main part of the movie, are not in sequence here. You may have VTS_01_1.vob, VTS_01_4.vob, VTS_01.5.vob, etc.., etc.. This is because we only ripped half of the movie data, and smartripper automatically assigns a blank, 0 byte VTS_01_1.vob file to the folder. So we need to fill in the missing VOB's to trick IfoEdit into thinking it is really a full movie, and isn't missing the first half (which, it is). This step is ONLY needed for the Rip 2 Folder, NOT Rip 1.
Step 21. In the Rip 2 Folder, select paste, to paste the DummyVOB.txt. file into the folder. Then you will need to rename this file, in order to make all your VOBs in numerical sequence. If your missing VTS_01_2.vob, then rename your DummyVob file to VTS_01_2.vob. It will ask you if you are sure you want to rename the extension, just select yes. If you are missing 2 or more VTS_XX_Y.vobs, then just simply re-paste the dummyvob file, and repeat the renaming as necessary until your VOBs are in perfect numerical order. Also, it helps to go to "view", and then hit "refresh" so you can make absolutely sure you have all the , if you don't you will be burning a drink coaster.

Section 4. Reprocessing with IfoEdit.

Step 22. Open IfoEdit 0.9.3.2
Step 23. Click the open button in the bottom left corner of IfoEdit. Navigate to your movie folder on your desktop. Then to the Rip 1 folder. Select the VTS_01_0.ifo file, and open. You will see LOTS of data into your IfoEdit screen.
Step 24. Select the "Region Free" button. It will either tell you that there is no RCE on the disc, or that there is a region checking on the disc. If its region free, just select ok. If it has region checking you can then reassign the region to suit your needs. (Region 1 = N. America)
Step 25. Then select the GET VTS Sectors button. It should ask you, "Do you want to process all IFO files? ATTENTION… this will automatically re-save all IFO files. " Select yes.
Step 26. It will tell you that it corrected sector address, and lots of other technical things. Just keep selecting OK.
Step 27. Once you have OKed all these windows, select "VOB Extras". The following options SHOULD be checked.

-Strip Streams
-Strip VobID's
-Corret VOB-Unit (Navigation Pack) pointers in VOB-files
-Correct new VIDEO_TS.IFO & VTS_01_0.IFO
-Rebuild PTS
-Remove P-UOps
-Adjust VOB-Unit Pointers
-Adjust Audio/Subp Pointers

The following options should NOT be checked.

-Re-Mux
-Split to 2 DVD-Rs
-Remove Macrovision
-Remove llvu/Angle Pointers

Step 28. In this window, select the target directory by clicking on the button at the end of the target directory field that has a "." In it. Then navigate to Movie 1 folder. Then click the OK button.
Step 29. This brings up the streams list. Make sure that EVERYTHING is checked, except for things that you are 101 % sure that you DON'T need. If its checked, it keeps it, if its NOT checked, it strips (deletes it). If you don't know, leave it checked. Once your sure, hit "strip it".
Step 30. Then it will bring up the "VOB IDs" window. Check the Check ALL button. Then hit "Strip it".
Step 31. It is now reprocessing your movie, go make yourself a nice sandwich.
Step 32. When done, IfoEdit should bring up a window that says "Finished Correcting VOB Pointers". Click OK.
Step 33. Click OK again for "Corrected Sector Adresses".
Step 34. It will then say Somethings Wrong - IFO Endsector does not match file size. Just click OK, this doesn't matter. Keep Clicking OK until it makes no more pop-ups. Close IfoEdit.
Step 35. Reopen IfoEdit. Navigate to the movie folder on your desktop, then to Movie 1, then open the VTS_01_0.ifo file. Select GET VTS SECTORS. Click OK until no more popups come up. Then Close IfoEdit.

Section 5. Test the Movie

Step 36. We are now done processing the first half of the movie. Lets test our movie, by playing it in PowerDVD. Open PowerDVD. Then use the command "Ctrl O" and navigate to the Movie Folder on your desktop, then to "Movie 1". Then inside of the "Movie 1" folder, open the VTS_01_0.ifo file. Your movie should play. If it doesn't, try it one more time. If it still doesn't then you may have screwed up somewhere.
Step 37. Now lets process the second half of our movie. You will notice that the steps for the second half of the movie are virtually identical to the steps for the first half.
Step 38. Reopen IfoEdit
Step 39. Click the Open button in the bottom left corner of IfoEdit. Navigate to your movie folder on your harddrive. Then to the Rip 2 folder. Select the VTS_01_0.ifo file, and open. You will see LOTS of data into your IfoEdit screen.
Step 40. Select the "Region Free" button. It will either tell you that there is no RCE on the disc, or that there is a region checking on the disc. If its region free, just select ok. If it has region checking you can then reassign the region to suit your needs. (Region 1 = N. America)
Step 41. Then select the GET VTS Sectors button. It should as you, "Do you want to process all IFO files? ATTENTION… this will automatically re-save all IFO files. " Select yes.
Step 42. It will tell you that it corrected sector address, and lots of other technical things. Just keep selecting OK.
Step 43. Once you have OKed all these windows, select "VOB Extras". The following options SHOULD be checked.

-Strip Streams
-Strip VobID's
-Corret VOB-Unit (Navigation Pack) pointers in VOB-files
-Correct new VIDEO_TS.IFO & VTS_01_0.IFO
-Rebuild PTS
-Remove P-UOps
-Adjust VOB-Unit Pointers
-Adjust Audio/Subp Pointers

The following options should NOT be checked.
-Re-Mux
-Split to 2 DVD-Rs
-Remove Macrovision
-Remove llvu/Angle Pointers

Step 44. In this window, select the target directory by clicking on the button at the end of the target directory field that has a "." In it. Then navigate to Movie 2 folder. Then Click the OK button.
Step 45. This brings up the streams list. Make sure that EVERYTHING is checked, except for things that you are 101 % sure that you DON'T need. If its checked, it keeps it, if its NOT checked, it strips (deletes it). If you don't know, leave it checked. Once your sure, hit "strip it".
Step 46. Then it will bring up the "VOB IDs" window. Check the Check ALL button. Then hit "Strip it".
Step 47. It is now reprocessing the second half of your movie, go make yourself another sandwich.
Step 48. When done, IfoEdit should bring up a window that says "Finished Correcting VOB Pointers". Click OK.
Step 49. Click OK again for "Corrected Sector Adresses".
Step 50. It will then say Somethings Wrong - IFO Endsector does not match file size. Just click OK, this doesn't matter. Keep Clicking OK until it makes no more pop-ups. Close IfoEdit.
Step 51. Reopen IfoEdit. Navigate to the movie folder on your desktop, then to Movie 2, then open the VTS_01_0.ifo file. Select GET VTS SECTORS. Click OK until no more popups come up. Then Close IfoEdit.
Step 52. Test movie using same procedure as in Step 36.

Section 6. Burning to DVD-R

Step 53. We are ready to burn our movie onto DVD-R. We will burn the first half to the first disc first. Open Record Now Max.
Step 54. Choose data format.
Step 55. Navigate to the movie folder on your desktop, and then rename the Movie 1 folder to VIDEO_TS
This MUST be in all caps.
Step 56. Drag the VIDEO_TS folder, that you just renamed, into your project, in Record Now Max. and Hit burn.
Step 57. Once burn is done, Rename the VIDEO_TS folder something else, like VIDEO_TS1, or something, so that we can rename the Movie 2 folder to VIDEO_TS. Then Rename the Movie 2 folder to VIDEO_TS.
Step 58. Repeat step 56 to burn disc 2.

If there any errors, please let me know. I have made every attempt to make sure this is accurate.

that's exactly waht the MPAA wants you to think man....

and i think...that most americans will say what you just said....really doubt dvd copying will take off as much as cd copying did.

i agree, i think thats what the average person will say, and that is exactly what they(MPAA RIAA) are counting on. It isnt easy , or simple to do this.... well, until you know how to do it.

Great story!!!
Always good to see how people have different ways of doing things.
I always use the split function in IfoEdit and this always works like a charm (except for the late start sometimes). I prefer that way, because ifoedit somehow doesn't like stripping streams with smartripper.

But hey.. always good to see a simplified version !:p

rinkel, thanks

yes indeed, there about 100 ways to skin the cat, in this game. I tried to get IfoEdit to split the movie vobs, but was never successful. it would always crash. hmmm

alot of people are telling me to try DVDdecryptor- instead of smartripper. has more functions, etc..

biscuit,

A very detailed set of instructions. Well done, I'm sure it will help a lot of people

However, one thing puzzles me, why the need for dummy VOBs ?

Ripping the Movie (steps 8 & 9)

I have used this method to split, and found that all that's necessary is to make sure that when offerd the option to save the VOB, make sure you save it as vts_01. (I'm not sure what your'e default is)

This applies to either half of the movie.

Then using Ifoedit, create your new Ifo set. Again, apply the same principle to both halves. (Each half will have vts_01 VOBs)

Chapters on both halves start at "Chapter 1) Of course Disc 1 is the real Chapter 1, the other is created by Ifoedit)

I can't remember whether I used the original Ifo set, or got Ifoedit to create a Brand new set for each half.

I think it was the 2nd option.

Give it a try.

HomerJ :D

homerj,

thank you for your feedback- I have tried it with just the vts_01_1.vob, but if it didnt have all vobs in numerical sequence, IfoEdit would crash. I dont know why- perhaps a setting i had-

I will try it again sometime with your suggestions

biscuit,

I find that when I "save as" in Smartripper, save as "vts_01" ONLY

Smartripper adds the rest i.e. _01.vob.

So your first file should be vts_01_01.vob

Of course it also adds the _02.vob as well.

YOur right about Ifoedit, but the good thing about this approach is, Ifoedit has less to do.

HomerJ :)

This is a great guide, thanks a lot. The only thing i have to comment on is ifoedit always crashes when i use smartripper but when i use dvddecrypter ifoedit works fine. Maybe something i am doing wrong but as long as dvddecrypter works thats good enough for me.:)

Found this post by accident while searching for something else ...

I think you underestimated the market. 2 years later and business is booming for Ritek, Taiyo, etc. ;)
