Encoding to 3 discs despite secifying only 2

With the last two conversions I have done my "number of discs" selection in the bitrate tab seems to have been ignored. Last movie (PAL Payback) was 96.xx minutes so I set the bitrate tab to 40 - 97 min = 2 discs 800mb. Max bitrate 2564 min 300 min av unchecked Max av 2444. Using 5 pass vbr encode. Last conversion using CCE 5.0, one before that was TMPGENC. Using 2 second overlap, cant think of anything else that might be relevant. Logfile is attached....thanx in advance, and yes I have tried searching :)

Your movie has 145603 frames. With 25 fps this makes 5824,12 seconds=97,06 minutes. So DVD2SVCD sees this movie is longer than 97 min and makes 3 CDs.
Don't always believe the length from the IFO, it isn't always correct.

you should never leave your cutoffs so close to the actual time...if you want to be sure just bump up the offset to 99 or 100 just in case...might as well play it safe.

Thanks for the help....another mystery solved! :) If I set the cutoff too 100 will the 97.xx minutes be spread evenly over the 2 discs using maximum bitrate or will the second run a little short? I assume it will spread them evenly but i was trying to get the cutoff as close as possible just in case it didn't.

DVD2SVCD will do it's best to evenly spread the length of the video, and meet the highest filesize you specify. It will usually be very close.

So what what happens if you do a CBR encode with a bitrate/duration ratio that would be impossible to fit on 1 disc but you select 1 disc in the bitrate tab? Would the movie be cut short, spread over more discs, the bitrate reduced or an error generated? This is all hypothetical of course. :)

If you uncheck 'Min.Avg.' there can be no bitrate to small. You can do an 3 hour movie on 1 single disc, this is no problem for DVD2SVCD. But quality will be not very good.

i wouldn't recommend doing anything below 1500...and if you're going to do go that low, definitely don't do cbr...i personally don't go below 1700

What I was getting at and have been curious about is what happens if, say, you have a 120 min movie, set a cbr bitrate of around 2500, no min bitrate, and then tell it to put it on 1 disc when it would obviously need 3 at those rates. Would bitrate win (moe discs created automatically)) or Number of discs win (bitrate reduced automatically) or would an error be generated. I suppose if no-one knows I will try it myself and let you know the results. I don't know why but I feel the need to know these things. :sly:

If you set an min.avg., it will win over number of disks. That's what this option was made for: To prevent doing an encode with lower bitrate than you set as your personal 'quality border'.
