but modulated was possible, back then. how was/is that possible ? has that ever changed ? or were you only speaking of "un"modulated modes ?

I'm not sure what I was talking about. Perhaps the API implementation in vfw/core was insufficient back then, or I was worried about the per-frame overhead of VOL headers. I think it was just a problem with the way core handled custom matrix encoding - back then you were only allowed to send the matrix once per encode or something.

is the h.263 matrix also sent as VOL-header ? I guess not, then ? sorry, I didn't find anything concerning that.

H.263 does not have a "matrix" as such, it just divides every DCT coefficient by (quant * 2).

so changing from MPEG to h.263 midstream doesn't force a new VOL header ? is there any overhead involved changing to h.263 ?

cheers

Hi!

Long forgotten thread huh?:)

I spent some time testing custom matrices and I found funny bug/not bug in XviD. Namely when I compress a clip using custom matrix and then set it back to normal MPEG codec seems to use still the custom matrix - the resulting file is exactly the same in length  . I tried it for a ridiculous matrix giving me shitty picture and the results were corresponding - same picture. The same result I got in 2-pass encoding using the matrix called New Modulated HQ. If anyone is interested in it can be the way to use custom matrix in modulated encoding. :p

P.S. Maybe someone noticed it earlier but I haven't read it before. If so then sorry for this post.

This I have reported 2 times up to now, but got no comment or response at all.

Now I have a link to the latest build on my desktop, which I always hit after finishing playing with custom matrices ...

Can someone post the format of the file that the custom quant matrix is saved ?
I want to write an app to automatically create a file were the settings will be saved, because it's very frustrating to manually edit 63 and 64 values from the Gui of xvid.

Thanks in advance .:)

Isn't this just what the save button in the custom matrix GUI does?

Nitrogen nicely published a link for a whole collection of matrices (also CG-matrix) in this (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=34493&perpage=20&pagenumber=2) thread.

cheers
