problem VCR to miniDV to HD via 1394

I'm having trouble geting VHS tapes captured into my computer. The reason for the new post on an old topic is my setup.

a VCR with only RCA connectors
a JVC DVM-90 miniDV cam (with included base unit)
typical 1394 card

1) I hooked up a yellow vid cable and another aud cable (separate white & red) to the VCR out connectors.

2) The other end went into the corresponding connectors on the JVC's base unit.

3) plugged in the JVC's 1394 port to the computer (I don't have any problems capturing from miniDV tapes)

4) opened premiere

The cam's documentation is poor but it say's to do this and then press record. A "DV.IN" should appear on the screen and then you hit play on the VCR and then hit record again on the cam and the "DV.IN" should now be highlighted.

What's happening to me is that when I hit record on the cam, it does say "DV.IN" but the screen starts flickering and hitting record again does nothing.

If anyone has a similar cam or has done it this way or has any advice, I would be most grateful.

If you're absolutely sure that your camcorder is supposed to be able to pass through from analog sources without recording to tape, then just ignore this - otherwise I guess this is your problem.

I have the same problem - my Sony PC100E doesn't pass through analog signals to DV. That means as soon as you connect the Firewire cable, the analog in/out is automatically locked to output. The only way to capture analog video to DV is to record to DV tape first and then capture to HD. Not a good solution (it sucks, to be honest ;))

Thanks, I contacted JVC and it turns out that this cam can only output not input, so I'm out of luck with this method.
