View Full Version : Audio samples defective in AVI file

I have an AVI with probably mp3 soundtrack, when I try to trim it with virtualdub or save wav file it comes back with an error:
"Audio samples 22139662-22139711 could not be read in the source. The file may be corrupted."
and the operation fails. I've scanned the file with Divfix but it reports no errors. When I try to process this file with nandub it consumes ~150MB of virtual memory on win2k and seems to do nothing..
I'm using the latest versions of both virtualdub and nandub..
any ideas how to trim this AVI so it fits a CD?
Methods I use are to extract the mp3, reduce the bitrate and remux, OR just trim credits at beginning/ending, this to avoid the reencoding.. Both methods fail since it seems the audio track is defective...

try fixing your mp3 track with BeSplit v0.81.
post BeSplit's logfile.

I did read the FAQ..
The problem I have is EXTRACTING the MP3 audio from the AVI file. When using virtual/nan/dub I get the error in my initial post. Using AVI2WAV extracts it as WAV, I don't want that, I want the mp3 (I'll use avi2wav as a LAST resort) due to size, loss of quality when decoding/encoding. From what I understand, the other tools like BeSplit/Sweet all operate on sound files, which I don't have yet, I only have the AVI file...
any ideas?

try avi2raw.
commandline :
avi2raw60.exe -a [input.avi] [output]

Thank you very very much for the support and ideas.. I tried avi2raw even though I'm not sure exactly what it's supposed to do, I issued:
g:> avi2raw60 "The 6th Day.avi" "c:\burn\a\6day.mp3"
avi2raw60 - mpeg4ip version 0.9.4.1
avi2raw60: error writing c:\burn\a\6day.mp3: Invalid argument
avi2raw60: warning: could only extract 0 seconds of video (1082783744 of 24896 frames)
24896 video frames written
A file is written 101MB in size, but it's not a valid mp3 or avi according to winamp or virtualdub..

Hi.
I think avi2wav extracts the audio stream as it is in the avi, only the extension is .wav (you have to change it to .mp3). Then you can use BeSplit to fix the header (but i think this is not necesary)

1. Adding the "-a" doesn't help, it still fails after ~21MB exactly where it fails with virtualdub.
G:\>avi2raw60 -a "The 6th Day.avi" "c:\burn\a\6day.mp3"
avi2raw60 - mpeg4ip version 0.9.4.1
avi2raw60: error writing c:\burn\a\6day.mp3: Invalid argument
2. I let wav2avi run to completion and it created a 478.5MB file!!! (the total AVI is 703MB).. The file plays OK in winamp showing 128kbits/48khz and 522 minutes!! The movie is only 123 minutes. I can't seek to anything beyond 23 minutes or so, but I can play beyond it.
3. Decided to run it through besplit as recommended in initial post and got a file that is 225.7MB showing as 128Kbits/48Khz and 246 minutes.. still much more than the movie.. End of output:
[03:11:45:008] Stream error : Sync found after 1515 bytes
[03:11:45:056] Stream error : Sync found after 3283 bytes

4. virtualdub it reports the following:

#of frames 219655
min/avg/max/totsiz .. 8/2923/35002731 (627160K)
5. This AVI only plays in DivXPlayer 2.0Alpha. All other players give errors or do not open the AVI file at all. I tested with:
The Playa (0.6.6)
BSPlayer (0.85)
WMP (6.4.09.1121,7.01.00.3055)
RadLight (3.03 R5.2)
6. I ran it past DivFix with no reported errors..
7. Finally, the movie is not a gem or something you can't rip/download but the technical challange is what keeps me going...
any way to process this AVI somehow or extract the audio for processing?
Thanks,
Stormy...

indeed it seems to be a somewhat challenging sample.
If you have a mac handy, you should try DivX Doctor II (http://doctor.3ivx.com/) and DivX Validator (http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/). These utilities are work-arounds for "fixing AVI-based DivX files so they will play in the QuickTime architecture" using extraction of the audio, and fixing of the audio track/information.
It would be interesting to see the results of these programs on your particular clip.

Sorry, no MAC available... At this point only windows (I hate it!!) Back in my natural place I use mostly Linux/True64.. but now I have to get by with win2k...
I'll be out of reach for the next 4 days...
any ideas until then...

HY!
I have a nearly same problem (Sorry for my poor english).
So I have Das Boot in 2 divx files, I had problems with the extracted wav renamed to mp3 audio file with headac3he. Complained about last sample blabla..., I tried to get the audio part with avi2wav, but same problem, so I decided to correct the avi with avi fixed 1.0, It came out with same filesize but half of the video and audio is out!! Even virtualdub cannot seek past 50 min. So what can I do, of course the problem is that I let avi fixed 1.0 overwrite my original avi file. So if you have a suggestion please help.
Thanks

i would really suggest that you try to fix your extracted file with BeSplit v0.82..

I finally solved the problem by
1. Running the AVI through divfix even though and selected "rebuild index" "cut out bad parts" "keep original"
2. After that the output file was OK for processing through virtualdub, etc.
I now have another AVI which is very nasty as well for which I will devote another thread shortly...
Thanks for all the help.
Stormy.
