I'm trying to follow the guides (3 so far) to copy a DVD to a DVD, this is no surprise, TOUGH. I have yet to copy ONE DVD usaing the guides I have found. I'm not stupid, I have been known to follow direction from time to time, but dam, is there no better way to do this than copying 5 pages of print that may or may not (not in my case) solve my problem? I sware, I have followed these directions to a T, but there are variables that don't pertain to my movie (Iv'e tried 3) and then its bedlam. Is there a step by step (more so then the ones Iv'e seen?) I'm havin fun, but would love to make headway. Now I know alot of you wil want specificfs, and what you did at what time etc. (afair questions) just know that I tried and failed using the existing faqs, Dam. Oh well, I will plunder on, and get lucky eventually, but if there is a newbie outhere who has had luck with a guide, please let me know. Thanks

Read the guides, read the guides & read the guides again.

Read the forums, read the forums, read the forums.

Pull your hair out, then pull out some more.

Kick the cat out.

Have a large whisky, then another.

Take asprin for headache the next morning.

Give up for a couple of days.

Come back, and all will become a bit clearer.

No seriously, I've only been doing this for the past few months, so I can sympathise with you.

With hindsight, some of the guides go into too much detail, menus this, extras that etc.

My first movie was SHREK. Turned out to be one of the harder ones to rip. How was I to know ??

Start with a single layer (DVD-5) DVD. That way, all you have to worry about is ripping the whole disc, Get VTS sectors (Ifoedit) and re burn to new Disc.

When you finally get the hang of it, you'll see, it really isn't that hard. Trust me.

i have one bit of advice...dont give up! it's worth it in the end! i have found an easy method....took me several days of trial and error to finally get it....i was at my wits end also! ....ready to return my burner! LOL....here it is....grab ur pen and paper! LOL

STEP 1: rip the dvd using smartripper...use all default settings except...use stream processing! enable the little check box its on the second page on the main screen...rip only the movie...make sure u check 6 channel sound english...and english video also...no subtitles...and make sure others is checked on the bottom...save settings....rip!

STEP 2: ok...now load the ifo file from ur rip into ifoedit...a wonderful tool! it will tell u to make all VTS in capital letters...say yes...now...this is a tricky part...maximize ifoedit! the square box in the right hand corner....this allows u to see all the controls on the bottom! click on vob extras on the bottom... now!! check strip streams...change vob info...change nav pointers...this is important!! dont check create new video ts and video ifos!! do this later! slect ur destination directory! u have to choose two of these! whew this is tough! it took me a while to realize the importance of this...LOL if the ripped file size is under approximately 4.45 GB....ur in luck! u can eventually burn to ONE DVD-R ONE HINT::: USE DVD-RW's til u get the hang of all this! it will save u a ton of discs...and coasters! LOL create a new directory on ur hard drive,,,i call mine 1ST PART...in case i have to split the movie in half...in which case i save the second half to my 2ND half directory! confused yet?? LOL>>>.sorry ... im teasin' u! after ifo edit is done...u close it! very important! then u reopen it whit the ifo file that is in the 1st part directory...now....u have different settings!! uncheck strip streams! keep change vob packs and ifos...and save again to a different directory! WHEW im confused now!LOL....now u can see why it takes so longgggggg to learn this!! Name this new directory VIDEO_TS...one thing,,,,make sure all ur vobs and ifos have the same name,,,that is...the same number...such as...vts_01_1.or else u will get an error when u try to burn...all vobs have to have the same base number....vob_01_1..vob_01_2..etc///now....when ifo edit is done...u close it again...now u have to manually copy all the vobs from 1st part to video_ts....now...open the ifo file from video ts...press get vts sectors on the bottom...and click ok on anything that comes up....close ifoedit again...now load the vts ifo file into ifoedit.and get sectors...now ur done...close ifoedit...and burn! woohoo! how simple!! LMAO!! i hope this helps...and i got everything right...u'll get it...be patient!good luck!....int

I'm pretty new at this myself, maybe 4 months in. I've done maybe 5 movies, all via different methods, some more succesfull than others, using nothing more than doom9 guides and forum search (with the occasional post). The guides are great, but leave a lot of detail out, plus not all dvd's are the same. That's what the forum is for. For a while, I would zone out at work just reading post after post whether it had anything to do with my problem or not. Just learning. It's a steep learning curb, but I think I'm finally getting it. At first I was just hacking: dvdecrypter->ifoedit->rempeg->ifoedit->burn. However, a desire for higher quality, and the diversity in DVD structures has driven me to actual authoring. Right now I use smartripper -> dvd2avi -> avisynth -> CCE or TMPG -> maestro. It's a long process, but hang in there, read more posts, more guides, and keep chipping at it.

 Hard???? You mean like stepping off the deep side of the pool before you know if you can swim?

Try my entry into all of this: I'm not at all interested in copying movies; I'm interested in creating them from scratch. All on my computers. Hair-pulling on the video part is a mere morsel. Sure, I don't have to deal with all the 24/25/29 fps conversions, etc. that most of you do, but I get to replace it all with animating graphics, all the while trying not to spend the rest of my life creating a 5 minute video!

But you are right: the stuff is a lot of fun. And progress will come for you as it has for all of us. Just keep your mind open and a sense of humor that permits you to waste 20 hours and get absolutely nothing done.

Peace!

Ultralight, why not have a look at my step by step guide? Its long and lengthy, but if you follow all the steps, you should have no problems!

I too have been having very limited success after reading reading and rereading all the guides. I followed biscuit's instructions and it plays perfectly on my HD. It also plays perfectly on my PC. However on my standalone I get the director's talking over the movie and can just barely hear the movie in the background. I'm new at this what can I say. Any suggestions?

Smoker,

It sounds like you've encoded the director's comment soundtrack, or if you have multiple, maybe that was the highest order? If you 'stripped' the audio, you should have been given a choice of audio tracks to strip. I usually just keep the AC-3 6 channel and toss the rest. From the sounds of it, you may have kept the directors comment track and another, and your standalone is defaulting to the comment track.

Can you switch audio tracks on your standalone? There's usually an audio button on your remote to move from track to track. See you can switch it.

Padre! Thanks bro I'm so stupid. I swiched the audio channel and that was all it was. I started watching the first chapter and it came to a spot where it got all distorted blocky and such. I got through that one area and It seems to be okay now. Obviously I'll have to burn another one though. What might cause that? Cheap media? Thanks!

Smoker,

Your'e nearly there. Looks like you stripped the wrong audio track, other than that, it looks pretty good.

It might help if you use Ifoedit to analyse your ripped files. This might show which tracks you ripped.

Smoker,

You could have one of two things: It could be defective media (not necessary cheap, as Carlos is discovering with higher priced TDK) or it could be a DVD-R compatibility issue with your player.

I'd try a couple of things:

1) Try the DVD in another player, maybe a friends. See if it jumps or pixelates on that player. If it does, it's probably bad media

2) Record to DVD-RW media and try that in your player.

3) Lastly, try to narrow down when the problems occur. If it's at a certain spot (Example: exactly 15 minutes in), then it looks like a media issue.
