View Full Version : Having some problems with VobSub (crashing)

OK... I'm not exactly a pro, but I've done a few DVD's before this without and trouble. I feel relatively confident that I know what's going on :)
Now, the problem is with ripping the subtitles from this DVD. Unfortunately, it is the 3rd disk of the Evangelion series, which I know is a favorite of many people here... but I'm not worried about the whole IVTC thing here. I can deal with that on my own.
What happens is that I do all the normal GKnot steps and get to the last step which is ripping the subs... I select the .ifo, make sure all the cells are selected and hit ok. It does the first step (finding key) fine, then when it starts for real (indexing), I get this error:
"Run a DLL as an App has encountered a problem and needs to close."
WinXP, 512MRAM, Athlon 1.2, etc...
I've tried doing the "I've stripped the source files and crossed my fingers", and that will get the subs, but they are WAY off in many places, by several seconds.
So, is there a way to rip subs that I can select when I do the final encode with GKnot? Is there a way to make Vobsub work normally? If you can just send me to a page with information on problems like this, that'd be greatly apreciated :)
EDIT: I've tried with .21, .23 and .26

try to rip the subs with SubRipper, there is a certain line that you can add to your AVS scripts so that the subtitles created by sub rip will work. If you decide to do that, just follow Doom9's guide for SubRip. Another plus to this ripping method is that you can edit the subtitles maunualy and fix all the stupid sensorship problems. (Not many on the DVD's but still).
Good Luck with the EVA disks, I have had nothing but trouble with those. For some reason my audio and video are never in synch and i have to play around with it in Nandub using a sample MP3 so that I can find the right start time. On Disk 3 the audio delay was -1500ms. I used OGM format for these since I wanted to have all 4 audio languages and Ogg with a setting of 2 worked great and gave me good file sizes to work with. :)

haha, sounds just about right. I got the same audio sync problems myself. Disc2 Ended up with an offset of -1465ms :)
I actually loaded up a short clip from the encoded video using Adobe premiere, and added the mp3 to it... that way I could check the waveform on the audio and see if the peaks synced up with the lip movements. It looked like I got it right on, but I couldn't be sure because it is hard to see the waveform.
But thanks for the speedy reply, I've already got it downloading and am learning how it works now :)
EDIT: Hrm, after reading a bit, the subs will look differently from what's on the DVD, right? I'll be generating the subs on the fly during encoding, instead of using the images from the DVD?
EDIT2: Ugh, lots of spacing errors (every second word has extra spaces in it). That's gonna take a loooong time to fix. Is it possible to make GKnot use ripped .bmp's or .sup's?

Yeah LOL i should have mentioned that before. It won't be using the original subs but make ones on the fly which is cool for when you turn them off. And OGM only supports .srt right now so no way around it. But the new version has a built in error correction which did a wonderfull job with most of the recent movies I have encoded. There is also a way to make SubRipper rip just the images to .bmp, it's in one of the option settings. I don't know how to make those bitmaps into a file that can be read by VobSub. So maybe you should go search in the Subtitle forum.
This is not really a Gknot related probelm, since it's more or less just adding a fes lines to the AVS script. If you install the text subtitle support for VobSub you can read the .srt file created by SubRip. If I knew the line to add i would give it to you, but I don't. I just remember seeing it posted here before, so just search for it.

Ravlen, I just encountered the same error with vobsub for the first time.
I had always been ripping the subtitles from the vob files on HD without problems before, but suddenly I had two movies where Vobsub would crash with the same error you described.
I finally solved it by clicking "I've stripped the source files and crossed my fingers" instead of clicking "OK".
It helped with both of my problematic DVDs, I don't know why it doesn't help in your case.
btw. my subtitles were off by a few seconds when I tried to rip them directly from DVD instead of from the vob files on HD. Maybe you can get correct synch if you rip the subs from DVD?

Well, in the end I just manually sync'ed them, and it turned out fine... But I'll try straight off the DVD next time, thanks for the suggestion :)
