Just a heads up. This Movie WILL fit on 1 DVD-5 considering you:

1. Keep only the main movie. (no menus)

2. Keep only 1 DD track and no subtitles.

3. Discard the Paramount intro and outro (VOB IDs 1 and 18)

I believe this is the closest call I've had as the resulting files total 4,694,763,520 bytes. (pretty damn close to 4.37 gigs)

This is the region 1 version.

Hope this saves you guys some time.

i did a DVDVirtuoso project at work that came to 4.698GB (yes base 10, not base 2)

i just did this movie, but kept almost everything ot make it complete. basically, the only thing i ripped out was a dolby 2.0 english and a dolby 2.0 french audio track. i kept the dolby 5.1 and the commentary track. full menus were kept untoached. i then re-encoded all the extras to a 2500 avg bitrate. i was able to use a 4475 avg bitrate for the movie which looks just like the original (used CCE to do a 5 pass encode). so, if you want to make the disc complete, here's my method :)

This is the second movie I've encountered (the first being The Gift) which doesn't seem to Rempeg. It's only 98 minutes so the file size shouldn't be as large as it is (same as The Gift). After using Rempeg you'll end up with blocks appearing in the picture.

The movie can be trimmed to fit on one disk but I'm real curious as to what is causing this problem - anybody have an idea?

Good to know we have other people who care about having a DVD that looks/performs as well as the original! I for one would never visit a thread where all they talk about is stripping menus and making 'wanna-be divx'. :D

Then again, I know a lot about what I'm doing and I'm willing to take the time to learn things right instead of looking for the 'quick-fix'.

One question: 2500 on an extra? You care about your extras a lot! I use decomb and 1750 5pass and I'm OK with those results. Sometimes I can't even get the main movie in at > 2500 if I do extras too high!

Eyes Only, While I respect your obvious knowledge of DVD authoring, why would I want to "take the time to learn things right" if all I'm concerned with is the main movie? I don't want to piss off all you "purists" out there, but when I throw in a DVD, I think it's a hassle to navigate through menus, choose subs or not, and choose prologic, DD, or DTS. If I'm not going to use these other features, why put them on my disc? Because it's not "right"? When you re-author your discs, do you keep the FBI warnings also? Because they are on the original.:D If I do have to bring down the bitrate, I just re-encode with CCE and author with Spruce. Cop-out? Maybe. Easy? Yes. But if I had to take my bitrate down to 2500, I would rather split that title. (or actually buy it):eek: Even at a 5 pass VBR, I would see a difference on my HDTV. Sorry for the rant, but everyone on this board has his/her own ways of doing things for whatever their purpose. BTW, keep up the good work Eyes. It's guys like you that make my (DVD related) life easier. :)

to each his own, true. i did the extras at 2500 since the main movie still had a bitrate of 4450 which is still way higher than i normally do. so, it depends on the title obviously and how many extras. i would say i re-encode the extras to 2000 avg more times than anything else.

some of the lowest bitrates i've used for a main movie was 3100 i think. i used that for Hart's War (kept all commentaries, deleted scenes, menus) and Donnie Darko (complete except for french audio). i like to get around 3500 the min usually, but i like the extras a lot personally, so i keep what i can.

oh, and if there's dts, i 've always gotta keep that :) i love dts.

OK I can respect your distaste for anything but the main movie (i don't understand it, but I can respect it). I'm a hollywood enthusiast and so extras are exciting to me, I love to see stuff that shows me how an actor/actress really is behind the scenes, etc. And I love deleted scenes as well as alternate endings. I also delight in knowledge of how the original DVD was put together, so I guess that makes me somewhat of a fanatic! I didn't really mean to put down the movie-only dvds in my rant, but mainly to express that I don't think a forum should be created for it. I mean, how hard is it? Rip main movie, one ac3, reauthor, burn. No extra tools needed. Scenchap? Not needed. Ifoedit? Maybe. Ifoupdate? Nope, not with a movie-only where you don't keep menus.

Oh and yes I keep the FBI warning, though I do remove the p-uops from it so i can hit "|>". I'm a fanatic, remember? :D Closer to the original the better. Plus, I can strip that vobid if I want, but then many times other vts jumps have to be altered because of menu vts jump sequences or worse, and that to me just isnt worth me not having to hit "|>".

So anyway, remarks about the original posting. You told the lesser-knowing dvd-ers that they need to strip vobids 1 and 18. Good deal. But IMO anyone who needed this information anyway probably still doesn't have a clue how to do that. See you figured this out because you took the time to experiment and test and found the way, right? You obviously have a deal of intelligence, and you probably got that way by not being 'hand-held' all throughout life.

I implore to you all-- Please don't create a nation of non-thinkers and help the lazy to get lazier. Just because it's the new trend doesn't make it right, kind of like penis jewelry! :scared:

Points taken Eyes. Very intelligent reply. You would probably be surprised how many people find the "easy" method difficult. Think about throwing someone face first into Scenarist.:devil: Sometimes I think too much so I don't have to work as hard. You're right though, no need to promote stupidity. As for the jewelry, let's leave that to the females. :sly:

followed this, but the beginning of the Paramount logo seems to be the start of the chapters.

The problem i have is that the movie starts at 5mins 57s (even though it is all there - checked with dvd2avi)

Is there something i've missed in ifoedit?

Open up VTS_01_0.IFO with IFOEdit. Check PGC_1. Make sure it starts with chapter 1. If it doesn't, go to VTS_PGCITI, double click and you should get VTS_PGC_1 below it. Double click on VTS_PGC_1. Now scroll down to the PGC program map. Double click on PROGRAM_1: Entry cell number. Change the value to 1 and save. I hope that's your problem.

I'm not sure if the later postings answered this question; why are the blocks showing up after encoding with ReMpeg?

Latter postings didn't answer the question posted because it was a forum rule violation of rule 3 and possibly even 2 (it didn't have anything to do with the topic of the thread!)
