When to use the decomb filter?

After backing up many DVDs using the CCE Robshot method, I finally encountered some difficulty with Blade 2. The encoded file contained artifacts and the image was jerky. A solution to this was revealed in an earlier thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=33031) which suggested the use of the decomb filter. This method produced excellent results. Although I understand that using decomb even when not required is generally ok, it does slow down the encoding process.

My understanding is that Blade 2 was a hybrid title that used both interlaced and progressive video. But I have successfully encoded other hybrid titles (e.g. Sopranos episodes) without using this filter.

I would be greatful if someone can explain how to determine if a movie requires this filter. What should I be looking for? Knowing that a movie is going to require it before the first pass on CCE will be a great time saver.

Decomb is not a filter. It is a package of three different filters: Telecide(), Decimate(), and FieldDeinterlace(). Therefore, your question is incoherent at the start. Please read the Decomb help file and if you still have questions, pose them here.
