View Full Version : How to best remove a "flicker"? (panning scene "blurs" for two frames every 5 fr

I'm needing to encode an avi in nandub that suffers from a "flicker" during scenes that pan across the screen (it's anime, btw). What happens, is, that two frames of every five "motion-blur" (and also seem to darken). So: 2 blurred frames, then 3 good ones, 2 blurred, 3 good etc... I've tried just about every type and combination of deinterlace, IVTC, telecide, and decimate filters i could think of (with all kinds of settings) but I can't seem to get rid of it. Any ideas what I could do? Or a filter I may have overlooked?

Hi-

I'm not sure I fully understand. If your source is a DVD, then you make your .d2v with no Field Operation (29.97fps), and then IVTC (using Decomb, GreedyHMA, or IVTC2.2). If your source is already an .avi, then it's hopeless to try and fix it.

If you are working with a DVD, and you IVTC'd, I'd say you did something wrong. From the description, I'd say all you did was to deinterlace it and keep it at 29.97fps.

If you're setting up the .avs with GKnot, are you sure you ticked the IVTC button? You can check the .avs and see if you loaded Decomb and the Telecide and Decimate lines. And check File Information in Nandub to see that it's really 23.976fps.

I know you said you tried Telecide and Decimate, but from the description, it doesn't really sound like it. Something must have gone wrong. It sounds like all you did was to FieldDeinterlace maybe.

Yeah, my source is an avi... so there's nothing to be done? And yeah, I tried the decimate and telecide filters... they just seemed to make it worse, if anything. Thanks for the response, though.

OK-so I was right to be a bit confused. You said you needed to encode an .avi. I couldn't really figure if you meant to create an .avi (from a DVD), or reencode an .avi.

Yeah-the problem with reencoding the .avi is that IVTC works by reconstructing the frames from the fields and in the process tossing out the duplicate fields and converting to 23.976fps. But the fields have already been destroyed in the original .avi creation and, as you discovered, IVTC can only make it worse.

So by downloading from some idiot that didn't know what he was doing (if that's what you did), you discovered that he had only deinterlaced and most likely kept it at 29.97fps also. So, stick around here and learn to do it properly.
