View Full Version : Easy way for DVD Vobs -> "normal" MPEG2 ?

Hi folks,
I made many analog video caps and SVCD encoding, but I'm new to DVD ripping. I'd like to know if there's an easy way to convert DVD Vobs to "normal" MPEGs, without reencoding.
Let me explain : for example, I found out that when you split a normal MPEG2 file with BBMpeg , and tell him that output files should be SVCD, BBMpeg just reads the videostream and adds SVCD headers, so it's very quick. OK, the MPEG might not have the right size or audio, but then every prog (even my standalone DVD player) consider it as SVCD.
So since DVD is already MPEG2, do you know a way to change the headers without reencoding anything ? I'd be really happy to know.
Thanks !

use the same process you just mentioned, except when you split, just split it into 1 piece(start to end). or split it into the chunks you want to burn.

Since you have to resize the resolution of video stream of DVD (720x576 for PAL and 720x480 for NTSC) into SVCD (480x576 for PAL and 480x480 for NTSC), you'll have to re-encode again anyway unless you're doing XSVCD, which is no standard at all ;) And not all standalone DVD players can playback XSVCD with very high bitrate as well. In this case, it needs to re-encode again :D To check whether how high bitrate your DVD player can play XSVCD, go to http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvdplayers.php

Thanks for your replies. I may not have expressed myself correctly : I'd like to convert VOBs to Computer MPEGs, not SVCD MPEGs. When I get back home, I'll try to demux and "fake-split" it with bbmpeg. I hope it will work.

Just rename .VOB -> .MPG. Most progs will play it.

Hi folks,
- Tried to "fakesplit" it with bbMpeg after demuxing, telling him this is MPEG2, not DVD... No luck
- Tried to rename to .mpg, no luck
- Tried to rename to.mpg after installing Ligos MPEG filters (VobFilters 1.04 from dvd-digest) : it reads it but bad quality.
Nevermind, I understodd this is a codec problem, I just have to find the right ones.
Thanks !

Well, I downloaded the freeDVD filters, and playback is good now (much better than with the Ligos filters). The ELECARD Mpeg2 pack gives me even better playback, but there's an annoying logo. They don't say anywhere in their doc about how to remove it. Do you know ?
Thanks !

Do you know ?yeah, there's a couple links at the bottom of this page (http://www.elecard.com/products/mpeg2player.shtml) that will get rid of the logo for you.
