Unable to copy svcd's or vcd's to harddisk

I am unable to copy svcd files (avseq01.mpg) or vcd files (avseq01.dat) to my harddisk on my P3 laptop running Windows 2000 Professional. Each attempt, I recieve an error message "invalid MS-DOS function". These svcd's and vcd's play on my friend's system (which has a dvd/cd-rw combo drive) with Powerdvd in windows xp. When I try to play the svcd's or vcd's (from cd drive) in Powerdvd on my laptop it simply jams up.

I also upgraded to the latest ASPI layer yet that did not seem to solve the problem.

"In order to play VideoCD's on a PC (or even copy the dat files from a VideoCD in the CDROM drive to the PC's disk) you have to have the virtual device driver SCSI1HLP.VXD in Window's \SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS directory; otherwise, the file structure will not be recognized by Windows. My file was there but some program had changed it's extension. After renaming and rebooting, my VideoCD's now run without a hitch."

SCSIHLP.VXD exists in winnt/system32/iosubsys directory.

I would appreciate any help in resolving this issue :)

Have you tried using VCDGear to extract the mpg.

Could you please tell me how to convert an svcd cd-r disc to a "vanilla" mpeg-2 file using vcdgear.

Make sure the 'vcdgear' button is selected.

Under Extraction/Conversion select "Mpeg->Mpeg" (or "Dat->Mpeg" depending on the file type on your (S)VCD).

I always have the "Fix MPEG errors" box checked, but you probably don't need to. All other boxes are unchecked.

Click the 'load' buton and then select the .mpg/.dat file from the CD, then a box will pop up for you to select a place to save the file.

When that's done, just push the 'Start' button.

I tried it. The file won't play in WMP 6.4

In Powerdvd the file does open but I recieve a "weird screen" filled with garbled green, red, and blue colours covering the entire screen (they are something like the "borders" that appear in bad vhs recordings). I am unable to view the movie, or hear any audio. I would appreciate any help :)

I don't know, the only thing I can think of is to make sure "Enable toast output" is not checked. That caused problems for me.

It probably is an error on the disc. You could try ripping an image of the disc using CloneCD or blindwrite and then using VCDGear to extract the mpeg from the image file, or mounting the image using Deamon Tools.

Do search in the (s)vcd encoding & authoring forum for 'copy svcd' for more info on this subject.

Well intitially I downloaded bin and cue files. I used daemon tools to create a "virtual cd rom" and then I conducted a disc-to-disc copy in NERO. I will try your suggestions and search this forum in the meantime. Enable toast output isn't checked.

I'm surprised but I guess it may be possible that my "cd-rom drive" is simply incapable of recognizing svcd or vcd discs. However, in any case to "narrow down" the problem I will play these svcd's on a friends pc.I don't think (or rather I hope) its not corrupt :)

I have a DVD drive and a CD-Burner on my computer, and I can't play VCD's in my burner or from the file off of the hard drive. I have to play them from my DVD drive. This is probably the same problem you're having. I guess you have to play vcd's off of a DVD drive. Sorry.
