Crop your movie

Hi all,

why fullsize resolution?
I encode all my movies with a script like this:

LoadPlugin("MPEG2DEC.dll")
mpeg2source("K:\memento\film.d2v")
crop(8,74,704,428) .AddBorders(8,74,8,74)
ResampleAudio(44100)

You see the target resolution is 720x576 (PAL)
But I crop 8 pixels each side and with the resize option in DVD2AVI I see the up and down crop area.
The cropped pixels each side go down in the overlay of the TV screen and the number of pixels to encode are reduced with this method.
I think this brings quality too.

CCE needs memory!
With my method I get speeds around 1.6 with an 1800XP and 256 MB DDR RAM
But my system is not opimized, I will fellow the links above and see what it brings to me.

Ever heard that mpeg2 uses macroblocks (which is 16x16) ? They consist of four 8x8 blocks ?

Your 'optimization' is pretty useless as like before _every_ macroblock has to be fully encoded.

Also TV-overscan area is much larger than your 8 pixels border ...

I know you are one of the guru's in mpeg encoding!
And you're right with the macroblocks I have not think of it :confused:
Can you teach me about it?
If I crop in 8 pixel steps (for example 72) i get a resolution that is 704 x 432.
Is it right that this is a optimized resolution?
I will see at fitcd and it's cce optimized preferences to learn more.
I know that the overscan is bigger than 8 pixels (I think 16 at each side?) but what about a beamer?
But at all, on my TV (82cm 16:9) I can't find differences between the original and my copy. :)
If I have more questions I will ask in the german DVD-SVCD forum at german. You can see my english is just as bad as my MPEG knowledge

Those horizontal 'coded film pixel' resolutions are taking care of the tv overscan area:
- 688 for full D1 (720x576/480); macroblock optimized; but you can also go down to 672.
- 672 for cropped D1 (704x576/480); macroblock optimized
- 448 for 2/3 D1 (480x576/480); macroblock optimized
- 336 for 1/2 D1 (352x576/480; 352x288/240); only block optimized !

It would be best to use FitCD and play around with the sliders and values. Also be sure to read the FitCD.txt completely !

Beamers do also have an overscan area but not as large as tv sets.

But my last results are all very good, I think.
