View Full Version : Scenarist / Re-import changed asset?

If I re-encode an asset (.m2v file) do I have to reimport it (drag and drop) into scenarist - or is it like Premiere and After Effects - where it'll just reference the new one automatically? (As long as it has the same name)

You MUST re-import it because the Scenarist parsing file will be irrelevant for the new file - ignore this fact at your PERIL!!! You need to delete both the old file, AND the parsing file which related to that original file, only THEN can you re-import your new file, and let Scenarist create a fresh parsing file for the new MPEG.
Even if Scenarist does not complain about using an old parsing file with a new asset, you'd be a fool to continue authoring a project like this without deleting the old parsing file and allowing Scenarist to create a new one. Without a parsing file specifically intended for the newer file, you cannot expect Scenarist to accurately handle chapter placement / navigation etc. Also, just for related info, check out the posts in this thread:

On several occasions I've been able to get away with it by closing Scenarist, deleting the old .m2v and corresponding .vif file, and then reopening scenarist after I have the new .m2v in the same folder as the old one and with the exact same name. Sometimes the .vifs of other assets have info regarding the .m2v in question, so on one occasion I had to delete ALL .vifs and then open scenarist. Scenarist will create new .vifs for any assets that require them if they don't exist, from what I've seen.

Not guaranteeing that this is a 100% failsafe method, but I'd be interested in knowing if anyone hasn't gotten away with this.

Ack!

Thanks Arky,

I actually went ahead and just authored my project anyways - and it seemed to work - EXCEPT where I significantly shortened the video file - then it gave me an error message, - but all I did was change the "Duration" value for the video and it seemed to work fine.

I guess the reason why I didn't want to import it again, is because I didn't want to have to redo all my buttons, commands, links, etc.

Can I just delete the video file in the track editor and then drag and drop my new .m2v onto the video section? Or is there an easy way to reimport it without having to redo all that stuff?

As I recall from this weekend, when I tried deleting the video part, it didn't disappear from the track editor the same way the audio or subpicture would, when I would change those.

Thanks for any help.

you can import the m2v file. Then drag and drop the new on over the old one in the track screen. That way your chapter points and stuff are still there.
