Does Avisynth work with Corona?

I've been too cowardly or lazy (choose one) to install the new Windows Media Encoder yet.

Can anyone tell me if it will read Avisynth scripts as avi files?

And by any chance does it come with a codec so I could keep using Virtualdub?

Anybody tried any of this? No one in the "new a/v formats" thread seems to be using Avisynth.

Apologies for asking others to be the guinea pig, but I'm curious about this one.

Yes, I have tried it. It does not accept an AVS script

I know, I was disappointed too until I realized it can accept VOB directly!! Yes. But I had some trouble with proper cropping and resize values in the encoder. I will have to fiddle some more.

If you are running XP just create a star point for system recovery and revert back when you want to install. It didn't mess up my system.

Just a quick opinion of the quality. I think at 2000 kbits/s its good, but anything lower and its not really that good. Also, it blurs more than Divx 5 and obviously Xvid. But sometimes thats a good thing. Also, when the bitrate is high enought it does look good.

I'm more interested in HDTV and higher bit rates so that part might be okay. But of course then the blurring isn't good. :(

Reading more of the Avisynth FAQ (downloaded with Avisynth2) it looks like maybe I need to use that videotools Link2 wrapper thingy if I want to use Avisynth scripts with WME.

Anybody tried doing that? Or know an alternative?

I suppose I should just stop looping on this and just try it.

Unless the application was monitoring system hooks (?!) it'd never know the difference, be it Premiere, WME, CCE 2.x, Uncle Bob's Macroblock Creator or whatever.

How about encoding movies to a compressed ascii stream - do you know that strange quake-ascii-engine (rendering the scenes with ASCII chars :) ) where you start to go nuts?

That'll sure be interesting. And noone would complain about quality. Maybe about speed. ;)

Ive done dll hooking before, but surely if they were using the AVI file API correctly then it would load the AVS ok? If I get chance ill do a softsnoop & check how its loading the file (maybe it does a little manual AVI header check which could be bypassed?)

The link2 way of doing things is probably the better way...

It would be great if Nic could find a way around it, because to my knowledge Link2 is not free like AVIsynth.

Also, Tom, the blurring is intelligently used in lower-bitrate settings only. When I did a full quality encoding the blurring was much less.

Give it a try, especially since it is hardware accelerated for those high res, high bitrate HD encodes.

AVIsynth is compatible with programs that use the AVIfile interface properly. But a lot of programs don't (CCE 2.62, Premiere, etc). Those which don't need Link2 or an alternative like this DLL hook thing you're talking about.

And Link2 is free-as-in-beer but not free-as-in-speech. And it's speed is crippled until you register. If we could come up with a truly free replacement for Link2 I'd be extatic...

I thought Avisynth already did something very similar. That is, as a file system hook that gets control whenever someone opens or reads a .avs file, at least as a media file.

But I don't understand how it works or why it can't be made to work for WME9.

I asked all these questions about WME9 and hadn't realized it required Win/XP. I'm still running W/Me.

I guess I'll go play with H26L instead. ;)

I can't say whether it works or not as I haven't even yet tried to compile it.

But I was referring to the download discussed in this thread in the General Discussion area (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32577).

Damn, mplayer has it? If the mplayer sources weren't that.... hard to understand.... I'd like to port it to windows. So that even there you can enjoy the power of the "terminal mode".
Time to reboot linsuxx.
