View Full Version : Cannot get subtitles to work...HELP!!!

DJ Teknosys

OK, I'm trying to convert the DVD of Das Boot. I want to have two audio tracks, German and English, along with selectable English subtitles. Since this is my first time doing this, I tested it by just encoding 1 chapter.

Nothing works. I get the 2 audio tracks, but no subs at all. I've tried all times, SVCD type, CDV type, and even permanent (I really wanted selectable, but I thought maybe it was my player that was the problem. I have an Apex 5131 3-disc).

Does anybody have any thoughts? I've included the log from my last attempt, I didn't keep the others. I really want selectable subs with this movie! HELP! Thanks....

Apparently you didn't read the rules, as you just broke them. Pray whichever mod reads this first is in a good more, or expect to be striked.

I'm sorry, what did I do wrong?

Caps and exclamation marks, my friend, two enemies of most visitors here. Fix them and people will pay attention to your topic. Just make sure it doesn't happen again, and you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

I am experiencing the same problems over here. The only thing I can do is to use "Permanent subtitles", which I sometimes hate.

What burning mode do you use ? (Track At Once, Disk At Once, Disk At Once / 96 ). I am using DAO with Nero.

thanks

PS : And, yeah, pay attention to those CAPS and EXC!@M@T!0N marks... Who knows where they might send you :-)

1. Do you see any subtitles when you use the Preview function?
2. What is your subtitle Y-Position ?

hyperspaced

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I am seeing subtitles in the preview (both SVCD and permanent)

Always using the default Y positioning (-1). With the permanent subtitles never had a problem. With the SVCD subtitles, they don't even appear on my DVD player !!!

I really don't know if it is my DVD player or anything else....

Thanks

I bet you have one of those TV's that auto zooms. In the preview try setting the subtitles y-pos in a way so that the bottom of the subtitles matches the bottom of the picture:

|--------------------------------| <- Top
| Border |
|--------------------------------| <- Picture Start
| |
| |
| |
| |
| put subtitles here |
|--------------------------------| <- Picture end
| Border |
|--------------------------------| <- Bottom

BTW, are you 100% sure that your dvd player supports CVD or SVCD subtitles? If not check it on http://www.vcdhelp.com

And one last thing, I have striken you because you apparently don't understand the rules. First you make fun of the rules, and thereafter you break them. Not wise.

I don't know if this is related to your problem, but at least my Director's Cut version of Das Boot was really tricky. The subtitles were the ones from director's commentary although the preview showed the correct ones. The solution was to select 'next' a couple of times in the phase where the subtitles are selected.

thanks, I'll try putting the subtitles inside the visible frame.

My TV goes into auto zooming (letterbox) mode on selection. I also selected both 16:9 and 4:3 modes but in vein. It seems that simply the subtitles are lost! My DVD does support subtitles however (checked with authentic SVCDs).

I am confused...

thanks for your time

Have you tried CVD subtitles instead ?

hyperspaced
20th September 2002, 11:42
Nop, never ! I am not sure if the player supports them, but I'll give it a try. Thanks !

dvd2svcd

The majority supports CVD subs and not SVCD subs (actually only DVD players that are built on philips components supports SVCD subs afaik).

I'm having a much similar problem. But in recent testing (like, minutes ago) I switched from VCDXBuild to VCDImager and the subtitles *worked* on my Apex AD660. But I'd much rather use VCDXBuild....

... so I'll try using CVD subtitles. Thx for the idea.

Success... CVD Subtitles is the solution. Thanks again for pointing out the idea DVD2SVCD, here I was thinking "CVD" was an entirely different format.

BTW, thank you again for such an awesome program. Noob heaven. :)
