Pan & Scan Vectors?

I just read on a DVD board that supposedly information is stored on a DVD so the player know which part of the picture it should show in pan&scan mode. I searched the Scenarist Docs but didn't find anything.

Is there such a thing as a pan&scan vector?

Yes, there is (horizontal only). But, so far, I have not verified documentation on them.

Funny, but the guy (who I though was full of shit) was right. How come I've never heard of this over the last 3 years I've been addicted to the format?

Is it possible that the vast majority of standalone players out there ignores these vectors (or flags, or whatever)?

I don't know, it is in several books, such as "DVD Demystified" by Jim Taylor. It is also a part of the MPEG-2 standard 13818-2, section 6.3.12

For DVD the defined display area should be 540x480 (NTSC).

The only thing I have not been able to do is actually see an example, because most directors refuse to release DVDs with automatic pan & scan.

According to a german dvd-board two definate examples are the german (R2) releases of Sixth Sense and Arlington Road.
