is there a way to turn divx 5.0.2 encoded movies into .mpg files to play on a dvd player ?

Yes. Check out two of Doom9's Guide sections:

1. Format Conversion Guides (DivX -> (S)VCD, (S)VCD -> DivX, etc)

Many DVD players can play VCD or SVCD; many are limited and cannot use CD-R or CD-RW, check your player at the database at www.vcdhelp.com to see if it can use (S)VCD and CD-R(W).
