Unbelievable!!! Pinnacle PCTV capping @720x480 Uncompressed=0 frame loss.


Finally after 3 years of trying to perfect my capturing methods I have finally found a capture card that works! The stock drivers for this card have horrible audio sync issues and drop frames like it’s going out of style. However the new 5.01 drivers are working flawlessly for my rig, I get *ZERO* frame loss and audio sync is rite on even for caps over an hour.

I am not using VirtualDub :( I am using Direct Show Capture…I think this proggy delivers better-looking video anyhow. Again I am also using retail drivers from Pinnacle, which I found on there European web site. I am capping 16bit RGB Uncompressed @720x480…the results are amazing; I compare the video to DSS Pay Per View quality. Some images are close to DVD quality but the image still looks a little soft compared to DVD.

Update

Got the Pinnacle capping @ 24-Bit Uncompressed using VirtualVCR and the retail 5.01 drivers. So far the video looks fabulous...I would compare the final MPEG2 DVD output to Pay Per View DSS.

why do you want to cap in rgb , most programs convert to yuy2 , and if im not mistaken i think yuy2 is equal to RGB color space , and i imagine smaller.

and the reason you avis are still soft is because , for sat companys most of there streams are using nosie reduction and smoother filters like we use. so they can make the stream use less b/w per node ( cant remember the term for this ) so they can throw more useless channels at as.

Just use yuv2, bt8x8 works internally in yuv2. You should try to capture using a lossless codec such as huffyuv.

I tried the YUV and was not all that impressed with the output. Not to mention Adobe Premiere says YUV clips that I have capped are in 16-bit color:( .

I have tried both the Huffy and PicVid codec's, they capture fine also with 0-frame loss and good audio sync.

I think I will stick with RGB-24 uncompressed for video that is important for archiving and will use the huffy for regular usage caps.

I might as well take advantage of my 200gig RAID array...meaning why not use RGB-24 if I have the free space.

huffyuv is losses same bits in same bits out , if your encoding from rgb it will take that much longer with no quailty improvement what so ever.

808 state, make sure you used yuv2, the quality loss from RGB is negligible.

Just to say that 3 years ago, surelly you haven´t a P4 1.9 and Raid HD...that's more impotant than the TV capture card I think.

And the other cuestion, I have not seen a lot of diferences beetwen capturing in YUV2 or in RGB (to be thrully I don't see any difference, and isee a lot of pixelitation using Huffy) may be becose I have a K7 900....
