Best method for MPEG1 --> Divx

I have resently downloaded several episodes of a favorate TV show to save and put on CD. Most of the files are already DivX 3.1 but some of the files are MPEG1 which makes the files about 400-450MB each.

The DivX's i have are all 200-230MB so i can fit 3 on 1 CD.

What is the best method to convert MPEG1 --> DivX without loosing too much more quality, but besing able to have some type of good control over the file size. The fist episode i am going to be encoding is a 800MB 2 part pilot episode which i want to make 650MB Max.

Plz help...

Oh, so you know i have some experience with DivX but not with nandub or Gknot, so go easy on me :)

for mpeg 1 theres only one way I think. Demultiplex the file and open the video one in vdub/nandub. I'd recommend using divx 4/5 if you're not familar with divx 3 and simply encode it like any other file. Doom9 has a guide for it. You can use besweet to transcode the audio to mp3 or you can leave it as it is and mux the mp2 file.

neuron2, thx for that, just so you know. I can read. I fully understand that there is no 'best' method for anything. However, everyone have to there own opinion of what is 'best', and that is what i was after. In future i'll be sure not to make the same mistake and post without specifically saying i wish to get peoples opinions, not the overall best.

Anyone else who has any details on keeping a good amount of control of filesize please feel free to fill me in on the details...

From what I read the divx 4 codec sucks ass ....so um i would learn to use nandub ....it's really not that hard once you have read the guides n stuff. open mpeg in nandub select your filters if any select your audio. select your btrate n away we go...if you need any help at all give me a shout through private message or email.....k peace ..and you'll get there no probs....:cool:

In case that the MPEG1-files contain artefacts, you might find it helpful to configure FFDSHOW for MPEG1-playback and load the file as directshow-source into an .avs. That way you can use ffdshow's postprocessing to iron out some of those nasty effects.
