View Full Version : question about gain settings in Besweet GUI

In the predefined BesweetGUI profiles, a 10db gain is applied through Azid, but auto (post-)gain in the OTA options is also enabled .

My question is: why is it better to gain by 10db before the final normalization? Wouldn't the result be the same without this?

And is it safe to always apply a 10db gain on DVD sources?

10db gain + dialog normalization seem to be very safe combination for all dvds.
in most cases, after applying this gain, you'd only need to add something like 6db to reach normalization.

avoiding pregain for AC3 sources could made the lame/vorbis encoder 'consider important signal as non-important' (below ath threshold), and that's why i use a hybrid-gain mode of PreGain of 10db and PostGain of the rest.

Thanks! That explains it all.

By the way, I find it great we can always count on you with audio-related questions! :)

Just a stupid question from me:

On all my DVDs I tested dialog normalization is always -4db, will it be always like this or may it differ?

Because if it's allways the same, wouldn't a pre-gain of 6db be the same as pregain of 10db + dialog normalization reduction?

Thanks

The normalized dialogue level of AC3 tracks is -31 dB.
Most DVD's are encoded with -27 dB dialogue level, but there are some others.
That's why the dialogue normalization adds -31dB - (-27dB) = -4 dB.

It can differ from -4 dB if the encoded track has another level.
