Video and audio wander out of synch

I've been using VirtualDub 1.4.10 to transcode MPEG-1 files to DivX 5.02 Pro. In the source files the video and audio are in synch, but in the DivX file the sound wanders out of synch by a variable amount.

I remember seeing a FAQ describing what to do about this, but I can't find it now. Where can I look for advice?

Look in the audio section at the FAQ/Q&A stickies. If the methods described there fail to fix your problem then it could also be a video decoder problem, but first read up on those stickies please.

I found some appropriate advice, actually not in the place you recommended but at http://www.doom9.org/virtualdub_procedures.htm

This tells me how to resynchronise manually a DivX file once it has gone out of synch. What I really want to know is how to stop it going out of synch in the first place.

Do Video & Audio separately.
Encode the video part only in VirtualDub as usual.
Demultiplex the audio part from the MPEG file in TMPGEnc. Transcode it to MP3, then multiplex the MP3 with the soundless AVI in NanDub for example.

Sorry to ask a Lame question, but what GUI-based program would I use to transcode MP2 to MP3?

Gee, that would be a BeSweet rather than Lame question. I've used BeSweetGUI for other purposes, but I *think* it can transcode mp2 to mp3. You might give it a try.
