Hi all,

I think Linux deserves it's own forum on this site because even if encoding is still on it's dawn, playback offers in my opinion enough tools and possibilities to be discuss widely.
I know there is already a forum about players and playback in general but there are much more issues under linux than under window$ and finding good information about it is rather difficult.
Plus, doom9 provides at least 80% tips, guide and soft in an open and free environnement. Linux should be put in light then.

Well, what do you think about that?

basically it goes like this when it comes to opening a new forum: If there's enough demand and it makes sense (we don't need overlapping forums) I will do it. But how many Linux rippers come here? If you can rally enough support for your idea when I certainly won't turn you down..

although i wasn't 'playing' with linux for too long (a while ago), i would like to consider linux as my next os, due to m$ extensive and ongoing stuff that i don't like.

i know you (doom9) and koepi (at least) have some experience in linux, i definately wouldn't mind learning about multimedia in linux, as a further encouragment to make the move ;)

cheers

Well you're just right, if only few people are interested in such forum it would'nt be as usefull as i thought.
Maybe i need to wait a bit for real advantages playing media with linux (since the only advantage yet is pleasure) to insist on create that forum.
Anyway, there's a lack of infos souces on the www about that subject.

@doom9:
"If you can rally enough support for your idea when I certainly won't turn you down.."

The point is that i'm one of the low-experienced that need the help and links to other people in order to get accurate skills. I'm not the one to run and provide support on linux.

So...wait and see .

I meant finding people who would also like to see a Linux forum. You don't need any particular skills for that. Having someone to run the whole thing is quite another issue..

Guess I would be very happy to install Linux again at home just to support the idea of 'DivX on Linux'. No really, I tried it some month ago at home and all the tools around (for Linux) were really difficult to use. I think the situation might have changed by now.
As I use it at work all day there shouldn't be much of a problem to try that stuff at home again. transcode seems to be a really mighty application, one just has to learn how to use it.
So if there is a forum section for Linux I'd like to discuss and share some of my experience.

Regards,

In fact, really interested in seeing a linux forum here. I ditched Windows several months ago and I've been not only tinkering but USING linux on my desktop for nearly everything since. Especially nifty is that VirtualDub works just fine for me thanks to Wine. The only thing I ever use Windows for anymore is just this: doing DVD/DivX stuff. If I could figure out how to do all my video editing, DVD, and DivX projects under linux I could consider myself a happy and free man. The Doom9 guides were always my guiding light when the DivX explosion popped a couple of years ago when I was using Windows, but now I'm getting into more interesting projects like film preservation and DVD burning. This will be less academic when that Pioneer A05 is let into the wild and I spend quality time in Rochester.

I see it like this: if we could get a good knowledge base of people and tools together as USERS, and not necessarily assembly language programmers, I think we could work some magic. My problem now is that sifting through sourceforge is certainly helpful, but many projects were last dated a year ago and just taper off. It can be really hard to know what the hot tools are and how to go about getting this kind of work down to a science when you're not even sure what's all out there. This is what I like about Doom9 in general, and especially the forums. It's a great way to find out what's really working and why. I think of sourceforge projects like being afloat in an innertube at sea with tall waves. There's just too much water to see over to know where you are.

If it's not viable to establish a linux forum here on Doom9.org, I understand the arguement that it's a lot of (additional) work to do and doesn't pay off if no one comes and contributes. But another arguement might be the "build it and they will come" gamble. Anyway, I like to push linux where ever its viable. It isn't for everyone. But it IS for more people than you think.

I think "Forum / Site Suggestions & Help" is the wrong forum to reach lots of linux-users...

... "General Discussion" would propably be better

Lets get a mac forum going too, just kidding :)

Actually my company is pushing me to sell linux/amd systems, and amd reps are fully supportive on this i$$ue, which is nice, but the gaming/encoding software available is questionable, however I will without a doubt share my experiences with this for redhat 8.

I guess my question is how stable and accurate will guides/forums be between linux platforms? If it was more specific as M$ than maybe it would be feasible, but the problems and questions involved might be overwhelming.

I am new to this (linux) so if im talking out of my a$$ please let me know, (we all have to learn sometime).

We don't need to talk about gaming on linux... :(

But there are lots of very interesting encoding/decoding tools like: transcode and mplayer/mencoder, all "important" codecs like DivX 4/5, XviD and some more, and last but not least AVIdemux by mean (thanks for this one btw :) )

And I definetely forgot some more ...

We propably do not have too much linux-users here, but I'm sure they will come once there is a linux-forum.

I'm definitely interested in seeing a linux forum here, as once I was able to do my ripping under Linux I would be one step closer to being able to ditch windows altogether, and at present I don't know of many good sites relating to ripping & encoding under linux so it would be good to have a place like this available :)

I think it would be good to have a multimedia/encoding in linux forum , also maybe a standard linux problems forum ? Oh before i forget DEMAND HERE TOO! :D

This is good news. I was just coming here (meaning the suggestions forum) to suggest this very thing. I would love to be able to move to linux, but the lack of tools and support for media encoding just keep me with windows.

I hope this new forum will follow in the footsteps of the Avisynth forum and attract not only users, but developers.

Or we can make a poll and have a vote :)

During this month, I've been catching up with Microsoft related news. Several countries' governments are shifting from Microsoft into Linux including US Defense Department. I've been using Windows for many years but when I heard news about TCPA (http://www.trustedcomputing.org) I'm thinking to shift into Linux some day.

There's definitely the demand here too...

As M$ keeps on being bastardly and whatnot...

and with all the built in copy protections and gov regualtions and what not...

in order to use my home PC the way i want to i've decide i have to make the attempt to switch over to linux... i see linux distro's gaining much credibility and maybe even eventually garnering public support in the future as M$ tries to redefine privacy....

basically if i could do my encoding on linux the same as windows... i'd be a VERY happy man....

well.. as a matter of fact we do have a linux forum already.. so there's no more need to manifest a demand ;)

Yes and I'm very happy to see this motivation become reality. I'm looking forward to be able to do everything, which we can do on Windows, on Linux.
