Display device effect IVTC/Force Film rules?

Before you curse my existance, wait, my question is different, honest!! I've read the post at http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=23776 by hacko504 and I would like to thank him for such a great explanation. I think that the Gknot guide should include a link to that thread as it would greatly help newbies such as myself.

Anyway, my question is this. Is the display device used for viewing your DivX movie a factor that affects the rules for Forced Film/Interlacing/IVTC in Doom 9's Gknot DivX guide?

I'm planning on making a multimedia PC with an ATI 8500 or 9000 Pro, which has a component video output that can output at 480 progressive. Of course, then I want to hook it up to a (widescreen or 16:9) HDTV compatable TV that supports 480P. So I just wanted to make sure that I'm doing the right thing.

Hi-

Although I've never made an interlaced .avi for viewing on an HDTV, I'm pretty sure I'm safe in saying you should Force Film when you can, IVTC when you can't Force Film, and Deinterlace when you can't do either. You'll get a progressive .avi and that's what you want. In addition, leaving it interlaced is hell on the compressor.

I agree that hakko504's Sticky is a godsend. I wish they'd edit out all the questions though. It's getting harder and harder to dig out the meat in the thing.

And maybe there are some others that have had experience doing what you want to do and can add their experiences. Have you visited the AVS HTPC Forum (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?forumid=26) to see what they have to say on the subject? You may get some more information from their FAQ or the various threads.

Thanks Manono for your reply !! I think what you said pretty much follows the Doom 9 Gknot guide rules, so it's good to know that I don't have to do anything special to display on a HDTV. I quickly checked out that forum and it looks absolutely fantastic - I've already subscribed. Can't wait for the weekend when I'll have some more time to read up on it.

You're welcome. I'm a bit envious as I want to get going on a project like that, but it'll have to wait for awhile. One thing I was thinking, though-a CRT TV hides a lot of the DivX shortcomings, but an HDTV will magnify them. If I were you, if you're not doing it already, I'd start making my .avis in as high a resolution as possible-640x272 at least, and 704x304 when possible (for 2.35:1 movies). I think your eyes will thank you later.

Well if it makes you feel any better I will have to wait awhile too, as I don't have the cash just yet either. Sometimes I think I'm insane, I figure it's going to cost me about $5000 Canadian to get the TV and PC. However, another one of my interests has been quiet PCs, so if you do decide to make one let me know and maybe I can be of help. I beleive my multimedia PC will be almost silent, certainly quiter than an Xbox or PS2. As long as my Bits/(Pxl*Fr)
in Gknot will allow me, I crank up the resolution until the length or width goes one setting over 100 %. For example, I just did Life as a House with a resolution of 736 x 336 (16:9), so one day, when I have it all set up, I hope that will be sufficient to look good. If not, I just wasted a whole bunch of money !!
