As many people "abused" the "deflicker" filter by Donald A. Graft
for noise reduction purposes, by setting a window size of "1", I had
the idea to eliminate the (for this case) obligatory code and especially
the two-pass operation mode. As in this special case most parts of the
original code become effectively operationless, they just wasted time
for nothing. This new filter got rid of all those ineffective lines of
code, resulting in a tremendous speed enhancement, not to tell of getting
rid of the (now) useless first pass. The output of this filter is 100%
identical to the output of the deflicker filter with a window size of 1 !

BUT KEEP IN MIND: This filter is only supposed to be a denoise filter like
the deflicker filter with a window size of 1. If, for any reason, you need
a true deflicker filter, with a window size different to 1, you will still
need to use Donald A. Graft's deflicker filter in 2-pass mode.

I don't condone abuse of my filters. :)

Anyway, I can tell you, setting a window size of one just reduces this filter to the equivalent of Steven Don's DNR filter. You might as well simply use that. Or maybe I don't understand my own code. That is always possible. ;)

If you think a filter is not useful or something why not start a thread named eg "The placebo filters"?

I wanted to start a thread were all filters that are hard to find, can be uploaded and listed.

The user, like always, is the one who'll find out if it's useful or not. If he can't find the filter, then he cannot make this choice.

Hope you didn't think I was denigrating your efforts in this regard, which I think are laudable. I just wanted to point out that, technically, setting window size of 1 for this filter reduces it to another existing filter.

At my web site you'll find the A/V links page, maintained by my friend Fred. He keeps an archive of all filters known to man and woman. He is thinking of making it available to selected people via FTP. In any case, anyone looking for a rare filter can contact him and he is very likely to have it. :)

Thanks for your explanation, altough your first post wasn't taken negatively.

As for Fred, I had some e-mail contact with him (even included his link to my freeware list), he seems a nice guy and has even talked about some very interesting ideas ("page graveyard").

Every once in a while I take a look at his links...

I will insert his link separetly in his FAQ, altough your link is already in, but it will not harm.

BTW, is your link now permanently at shelob, or what (your into Tolkien, or must you use a Middle earth name when on mordor.net?)? My english isn't good enough to understand your explanation on your website :stupid: .
