I been testing ogg for a little while now and I would like to know if there is a way to encode low quality media like radio or tape in mono (or stereo) at bitrates lower then -q 0?

Thanks for the help,

Hi.

You can encode at -1 in quality range. Download the encoding tools from www.vorbis.com and a GUI (OggDropXPd) (this is optional :)) from http://www.inf.ufpr.br/~rja00/ogg.html
for this encoder the input has to be .wav

Another tool that i know can encode at -1 is the encoder within "cdex" (it's based on Xiph oggVorbis version 1.0)
http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/
(.mp3 allowed in input)

thanks. I've actually looked at cdex before, just not for this purpose. Do you know what the equivolent bitrate for -q -1 is?

There is no equivalent bitrate. It is a -q mode. It does not map to a bitrate. For 44.1 sterio sound the average nominal bitrate is just over 43kbps. But don't bet on it. Depending on what you are encoding it could be much higher or lower.

<hippytalk>Vorbis is free man. Free like a bird man.</hippytalk> Not just free as in cost but also as in bitrate. Sit back and let the -q do it's thing. It is best not to think of the -q as being equal to a specific bitrate or file size. Because that does not always work

Get the newest beta of CDEX, use the quality settings, and pick "-1"

Don't use the bitrate settings. It results in a lower quality/larger file.
