View Full Version : Ripping subtitles = poorer quality SVCD rip???

Instead of me ripping the subs to check, I will just ask for your expertise...does the addition of subs on a DVD to SVCD rip decrease the quality of the SVCD rip. I mean the subs must take up extra space on the disk, so I would assume that this would decrease some of the space of quality of the rip on the disk. Correct me if I am wrong, as I am relatively new at ripping.
Thanks for the insight!!!

Of course the subs will take up space on the disc, but not so much that it cost u a lot of bitrate. the bitrate u do lose will not be substancial enough to be noticeable during playback, probably only 10 or something. Which will be hardly noticable in a VBR encode!!

The subtitle streams are multiplexed into the system MPEG stream (already multiplexed audio+video) thus the bitrate of audio and video are not touched. This is for selectable subtitles.
If you choose permanent subtitles, the subs are part of the video stream and will be in its bitrate.

So I tried to rip the subtitles as per the guide and it didn't work...I can't get the DVD player to show the subs. The folder and bitmap's were ripped, but nothing!!
Any ideas/suggestions!!
Thanks for the advice on the quality of the rip when including subs by the way!!!

Look at Q16 and Q17 of the FAQ thread.

@titvs
the opposite is correct...
If you choose selectable subs, this will be an extra stream muxed in the MPEG-file, so some bitrate will be lost for video+audio, but not very much, a sub stream is ~5MB per disc, sometimes more, sometimes less)
If the Subs are hardencoded into the movie, you don't need any extra stream, so it will not change the avg bitrate of the movie. As the pixels of the subs all have the same color, this part of the picture is a little better to compress and the rest can use some more bitrate. So the quality should become better, but only a very little, I don't think this will be noticable.
